Can a PC run without a BIOS?

On bootup, a BIOS is required for all of the basic tasks, and it then hands over control to the Operating System, to do everything else.

But, if a UEFI is just a BIOS but faster, could you technically run a computer without a BIOS?

Im not sure if a BIOS has a job other than boot up, that a UEFI can't do, if there is such a task, then my answer is no, and if there isn't such a task, then my answer should in theory be Yes.

Are there options for long term cd storage such as cases that are airtight, protects cds from rot, mildew, etc.?

    Favorite Answer:

That's a good, and interesting question. Optical media can fail because of age. Pressed optical media can be readable for decades. But burned optical media has a shorter life span.

Controlling temperature and humidity will help preserve the data. But, it isn't necessarily mold that is the danger. Even without mold, temperature and humidity can cause changes. The metal recording surface can oxidize.

You can ask banks in the area if they have climate controlled vaults for their customer's safe deposit boxes. (If none do, that could be a marketing opportunity for someone.)

Store CDs vertically, not horizontally. They should be in jewel cases. Include humidity absorbing gel packs in the safe or storage container.

No matter how well they are stored, there is always the danger of physical damage. This might be the result of accident. There might be a fire where they are stored. We once had a CD drive malfunction, and it scrapped off the top layers, destroying the data.

Because of the possibility of accidents, the best long term storage uses backups. Consider storing copies of what is on the CDs in the Cloud. If you won't use the Cloud, make copies of each CD. Store the copies in different places: Your home, a safe deposit box, a relative's home, your workplace.

Periodically make new backups copies, and trash the old backup copies.

I heard about a line of burnable optical media called M-Disk. Supposedly, an M-Disk has a much longer lifespan than other burnable media. The makers claim M-Disk is designed to be readable for one thousand years. But, you need an M-Disk capable burner to write to one.

Why would they call me spoiled?

    Hypothetically:

So for my birthday I got a MacBook Pro, an iPhone 5c, AirPods, and $600. I commented about how old the iPhone X was and how I wished I got the iPhone X and my parents called me an entitled, spoiled teen. That’s unfair, isn’t it? I wouldn’t be spoiled, right. Could someone please explain if I’m a spoiled teen and why?

To shock, the folder that had all my videos got replaced with an emply folder from my backup and I lost all my videos. Is there a way I can recover my lost hard work? Is there a way I can do a reverse save or backdate like you can do on your computer on your harddrive. I want to get my videos back. thanks.

Is there any way to reveal who called using No Caller ID?

I was sexually harassed last night by an unknown number.

I went to AT&T and the police, but they have no way of revealing who was being the *67 call.

Is there any software I can use to reveal the number used?

It was a really disturbing call, and I don’t want it to happen again

What kind of computer do you have?

    Favorite Answer:

I am currently using a self-assembled desktop tower with a 6 core AMD FX processor running Windows 10. Next to that is a desktop tower PC running Windows XP because it has a brilliant sound card and related software that is not supported by later versions of Windows.

For Zoom, I use an HP laptop with a 4 core processor running Windows 8.1.

Somewhere around I have a Samsung 10" tablet running an old version of Android but I rarely use it.

What does mmh mean (I don't think it is meet me halfway)?

A question was raised: Do we have attendance from last quarter and projections for next quarter.  Answer was MMH - I asked this question in December when I was trying to determine capacity needs. This is what I got (then attendance from last December). What would MMH mean in this case, it doesn't seem like meet me halfway.

Why were computers back in the early 1990s fun?

Despite computers being a technological challenge back then, they were just fun.

I mean you would just put in a 5 1/2 floppy disk into the disk loader, and pull down a lock latch and press the computer button and you would hear a beep, and grinding of the diskette, and then the videogame would load, or program. Videogames would be fun, and programs would be interesting.  You took another 5 1/2 floppy disk to store your scores on and this was inserted into another floppy disk drive.

You used key commands to navigate through menus, as a mouse on a computer wasn't common or an optional accessory.

You could store your floppy disk in a folder or wherever you found necessary, and they were very thin, most of them were black and some were a brown color, and they were 5 1/2 inches and not easy to lose.
