  • Distribution of equal probability with N sample size?

Yesterday I asked about doing this problem:

Twenty-five percent of the students at Midwestern are taking 6 credit hours, 25% are taking 9 credit hours, 25% are taking 12 credit hours, 25% are taking 15 credit hours. Use EXCEL to do parts a through e.

    a. Give the distribution of X = number of credit hours taken by students at Midwestern.

    b. Draw a scatter plot of the distribution.

    c. Find the mean of X.

    d. Find the variance of X.

    e. Find the standard deviation of X.

That one was answered... and it was simply a matter of me not understanding what the instructor expected.

There are 2 follow-up questions, using the above question as a baseline. I think if I got a hint as to how to modify the results from above, I will be able to do this and the next question

    a. Give the probability distribution of M, where M represents the mean of all samples of size n = 2 from the population in problem 6.

    b. Draw a scatter plot of the distribution in part a.

    c. Find the mean of M for samples of size 2.

    d. Find the variance of M for samples of size 2.

    e. Find the standard deviation of M for samples of size 2.

The next question after this is the same as the above, but n=3.

I'm not looking for it to be completely done by whoever answers... I just need a hint as to the method, not necessarily the final answers. Remember the instructor is wanting us to use Excel to find these solutions, so it's more a matter of understanding the process.

  • Distribution of equal probability?

This involves statistical methods, and is for my homework. I have so far been very good with my homework and being able to do it myself, but I am just STUCK on this one, and I think it's largely because of the terminology. It's entirely possible that this question is poorly worded. The answers to this question, and the method by which you solve it, influences the answers you get in the next few questions as well, so it's a nice little potential "chain of failure" if I get this one wrong.

    ------

Twenty-five percent of the students at Midwestern are taking 6 credit hours, 25% are taking 9 credit hours, 25% are taking 12 credit hours, 25% are taking 15 credit hours. Use EXCEL to do parts a through e.

    a. Give the distribution of X = number of credit hours taken by students at Midwestern.

    b. Draw a scatter plot of the distribution.

    c. Find the mean of X.

    d. Find the variance of X.

    e. Find the standard deviation of X.

    -----

Now here's my problem with this question... Asking for the "distribution" seems kinda silly, since the distribution seems to have been given already, as 25% for each!

If we're talking a "normal distribution", and asking "what's the chance of a random student being in any of these 4 particular groups", the answer would be... 25% chance, right?

Now if' we're talking about "the chance a student is taking AT LEAST 12 credit hours", it would be the cumulative chance... but even then it would be additive, or 50% chance (25% chance of being 12, 25% chance of being 15).

    Please help!

  • Does a new Mobo/CPU require a reinstall of Vista Basic?

With XP, I know that there was a problem where if you had a VIA chipset and changed to a Mobo that had an nVidia chipset, there was a problem where XP had to be reinstalled (using a repair install, not a full clean install). It had to do with a registry value being set wrong, where a BSOD would happen on bootup with a stop error regarding a hardware problem of some sort (I forget the exact stop error).

Anyway, I have Windows Vista Home Basic (32bit), and it's installed on an 80gb IDE drive. I'm adding a 200gb SATA drive to the system as my main storage drive), and upgrading the Mobo/CPU/RAM.

Here is the old Mobo: http://www.newegg.com/Product/Product.aspx?Item=N8...

Here is the CPU I'm replacing: http://www.newegg.com/Product/Product.aspx?Item=N8...

    New Mobo: http://www.newegg.com/Product/Product.aspx?Item=N8...

    New CPU: http://www.newegg.com/Product/Product.aspx?Item=N8...

I am leaving town tomorrow, and am expecting this package today... I'm wondering if I should wait to even do this upgrade until I get back, because I need the computer tomorrow before I leave, and I would hate to have to spend the entire day reinstalling everything due to the same sort of problem.

So does anyone know if Vista will boot right up with the new hardware, or will I have to repair install it?

  • Dual or quad core processor?

I am about to upgrade my system again (been upgrading it constantly for 13 years, all the way from a 386 SX/16!) I'm a very experienced hardware and programming professional, but I'm behind the times on current hardware technology, because I've been doing mainly programming and teaching the past few years.

I'm curious about how I should rate multi-core processors in the first place. I have an AMD 3400+ single core processor, and I'm a bit confused about how to calculate processor speeds relative to each other when comparing processors with a different number of cores.

Is it a straight up multiplication? Like a dual core 2000mhz is like a single core 4000mhz? Is it not that straight forward? How do they compare?

Links to articles describing the differences and how to compare would be great (like tomshardware.com or something).

I'm also debating on whether I should get a dual core, or if it's worth it at this point to go with a quad core... What kind of cooling requirements do each of these types have, and is it worth the extra expense to go quad at this point?

For example, I'm looking at this dual core and thinking it's a good deal at $57:

    http://www.newegg.com/Product/Product.aspx?Item=N8...

Compare that to this quad core at $120:

    http://www.newegg.com/Product/Product.aspx?Item=N8...

So about twice the price, but is it really twice the processing power?

I don't like to upgrade too often, and I like to make as big of a jump as possible at once, but without getting in to that "top of the line so it costs 4x as much as it will in a year" area.

I have a saved wish list with both CPUs on it just for my own sake of "bookmarking" them in a way...

    https://secure.newegg.com/WishList/MySavedWishDeta...

I'm looking at either $175 for the dual core package, or about $250 for the quad core package. I'm thinking the quad core package is worth the extra money, but I want to make sure I'm not spending more when I shouldn't be.

  • Dual-monitor (Extended desktop) Firefox problem?

I have 2 monitors. A 17 inch LCD as my main monitor (on the right), and a 15 inch LCD as my extended desktop (on the left).

Occasionally, when I'm in a full screen game (like World of Warcraft), I want to be able to see a website on the left monitor while I play the game on my right.

Now, I WANT all new windows to open on my main monitor, but after putting firefox over to the left monitor (temporarily), every time thereafter, when I open a new firefox window (or close all firefox windows and open it from scratch), the window ALWAYS appears on the left monitor (maximized, as is my preference).

Numerous times I have tried moving firefox back to the main monitor and closing it there, to see if it will save the window location... but it never works! It keeps opening the window back on the left monitor instead of the right.

I have the right monitor set up as the primary display (#1), and the left as the extended desktop (so all coordinates of windows on that monitor should be in the negatives).

The right monitor is set up to its max of 1280x1024, and the left monitor is set to its max of 1024x768.

Can anyone give me advice on what to try, so firefox will remember to open windows on the right monitor? The best answer will be the one that tells me how to specify which monitor (whichever one I prefer at the time) to be the one that firefox remembers to open in (because I'd like to know how it's saving the left monitor as its preferred one as well).

  • A very sincere and honest question...?

First of all, I want everyone to know that I'm 100% serious about this question... and specifically with regards to this area of computers and technology, programming and such...

I guess the question is multi-fold.

    1) Why is it people ask for people to do their homework for them? First of all, they won't get an answer right away, like they could with a simple google search using the EXACT SAME WORDING... and secondly, what makes them think they have the right to circumvent their own learning by having other people do the work for them?

    2) Why can't people figure out how to use a search engine? Seriously... type your question in the search box, and browse the first 3 or 4 results, and WHAM, there's your answer! Whatever happened to the drive to solve your own problems through personal research, instead of asking everyone else out there to do the research for you? Seriously, you could easily answer half of the questions asked by simply doing your own Google searches, but instead people impose on others to answer the question for them? *sigh*

    3) How often are we going to see "How do I make a website?" questions? SERIOUSLY! I see like 4 or 5 of these per day!

    4) When will people realize that there's a difference between programming and scripting? C++ : programming. PHP: Scripting. VB.NET: Programming. HTML: Scripting...

So yeah, some of this question is based in frustration... some of it is just my cynical humorous way of looking at the world.

BEST ANSWER is the one that makes me laugh the most. :)

  • Where can I find a good web designer?

I am working on a game. It's an indy game, and I have a team of 3 others working with me. Progress is slow right now, but we're ramping up and getting close to the point where we will have something to show for all of our hard foundational work.

I have tried to find 3D modelers, texture artists, and web designers... but because it's an independent project, with zero funding, it's really hard to find people who have the right skills, but who will also join the team to work for free.

The thing is... once the game makes money, the whole team will be in on a profit sharing plan (as in, everyone gets a percentage of profits)... so it's not really "working for free" as much as it is "working for a percentage of what we will make later". :)

To be honest, I'm tired of finding 16 year olds that say they are "web designers", but all they know is how to drop pre-made dreamweaver objects in to a pre-made template. (Note: THIS IS NOT "DESIGN", as far as I'm concerned!)

Anyway, I'm wondering where I can go to find people who are skilled, and experienced, and at least willing to discuss the project.

I realize that people won't want to do this unless they know the game actually has potential. I'm willing to show that it does have major potential! It's just hard to get people who aren't already jaded and cynical because they've heard that all before from people who are creating games that never go anywhere.

Anyway... if anyone has any advice, let me know please?
