Hey there, I'm Alex. First important detail about me - I have an unhealthy obsession with the band, The Fray. You can find me in any recent Fray question, Isaac Slade is my Absolute idol. :D Other than FrayStalkerness, Im an excessive piano player and realistic fiction/mystery novel reader. And I think emails are still in style. You can also catch me in adolescent, rock&pop, or any random section I find amusing. Like Australian Football. I'm just hanging out. Thanks! P.S. Check out Isaac Slade's Facebook Fan Page please! http://www.facebook.com/pages/Isaac-Slade/90388414020?ref=search&sid=1453607528.1246275922..1

  • Psychology question about cognitive perception?

This may not even have a definitive answer, but here goes:

I was cleaning my room earlier and picking clothes off the floor when a black hair tie rolled/flung towards me. However, for a brief couple moments, I screamed bloody murder thinking it was a spider before I realized my mistake. Being a psychology student, I was just wondering what it was that caused me to perceive this stringy, doughnut-shaped object as a spider instantaneously when it took about three or four seconds to register as its actual form. Is it because my arachnophobia caused me to subconsciously be on the look-out and EXPECT a spider? Is there some evolutionary instinct involved?

I'm just asking out of curiosity - does anyone out there know? Thanks!

  • Is an 11 ACT writing score really worth anything?

I took the ACT+ writing earlier in February and just was able to access my score like, two minutes ago. I scored an 11/12 on my essay, and after some brief research, I found out an eleven is supposed to be in the 99th percentile. (Also, aren't you supposed to not get your writing score until roughly two weeks after your multiple choice scores are released..? Whatever...)

Anyways, I'm just wondering if this is going to be at all beneficial to me later on. (I'm a junior, by the way.) Because looking back on it, my essay wasn't particularly stupendous or anything. I mean, it was fairly lengthy, I suppose, but it's just somewhat hard to wrap my mind around the fact that it was apparently better than 99% of every other test taker's writing.... Is a score like this REALLY that difficult to achieve and do colleges (fairly selective, liberal arts schools in particular) hold it in any especially high esteem? Oh, and are there scholarships for it?

I'm pleased overall with my composite score - it remained the same from the first time I took the test, even though the average of my subscores is .5 points higher - but it's certainly shy of a 99th percentile rating. Not by much, necessarily, but not quite 33-36 composite score material.

So, I suppose I'm just wondering whether or not this will really have that much appeal to colleges or not. Can anyone shed some light onto this or potentially share scores they've received/most of their peers did?

    Thank you!

  • Am I on the right track for top universities with my GPA/activities?

I'm currently a high school junior with a GPA of 3.9 and I'm in the top 10% of my class. I am also involved in various activities outside of school as well as shadowing/volunteering at different hospitals/clinics as I'm looking to go into the medical field.

What I'm concerned about is that my activities lack consistency. My schedule is very difficult to work around seeing as I'm enrolled in honors/AP classes for nearly the entire year. So I'm in clubs and organizations like National French Honor Society/DECA/Newspaper/Yearbook/Group of Active Teens/High Schools Against Cancer which are "flimsy extracurriculars," meaning there's not really all that much work/commitment that go into them and we only meet like once or twice a month and usually I find it difficult to be able to make the meetings. Also, I haven't been in any sort of leadership position - like a club president/team captain.

I'm looking at colleges like University of Chicago/University of Minnesota Twin Cities (I'm a Minnesotan resident)/George Washington/University/Northwestern/University of Boston/etc.

As far as academics go, I'm in good shape, but if I want to get into top universities, will what I have listed on my application be enough?:

    - All AP/honors schedule with 3.9 GPA (wide range of electives, but no band/choir/dance)

    - Played classical piano for 11 years

    - Job shadow family physician and oncologist

    - Will be interning summer 2011 at the U of M cardiovascular center

    - Went to France for three weeks summer 2011 for academic French immersion

    - No sports except for school's Girl's Golf team (not on JV or Varsity)

    - French Honor Society/National Honor Society (will be participating during senior year)/Newspaper/Yearbook/Group of Active Teens/High Schools Against Cancer/DECA

I know it seems like a lot when I have it all written down, but compared to some of my friends who are involved in theatre, marching band, varsity sports, etc, it feels like my resume isn't as solid. I'm just wondering if I'm aiming towards a top-notch school (not one of the ivies or anything, but something close) if I would be a potential candidate when application season comes around. And would you suggest getting more involved?

    Thank you!

  • Need to choose a classical piano piece to play for spring recital?

Hello there! I have a recital coming up in the Spring that I need to choose a song for, and I need some ideas!

I've been playing piano for ten years, and the piece I just finished is Rachmaninoff's Prelude in C# minor, so something around that skill level would be appropriate.

So what would you recommend for me? Preferably something dramatic, like Prelude in C# minor, but nothing too terribly fast/slow/quiet.

    PLEASE HELP ME!

And thanks in advance for all answers! :)

And do you have any advice/tips for us? :D

  • What are your favorite time-consuming websites?

Like besides facebook / twitter / youtube / MLIA, etc..

I just realized I have nothing to do on the internet besides those four sites, and my email. Which depresses me, since I spend almost all of my time online and I'm running out of ideas. ;D Ha ha, so what are your favorite sites?

    Happy holidays, by the way!

  • How can I cheer up my friend?

One of my good friends didn't have such a good day today, and I'm thinking of sending her a little something to her inbox on facebook. Does anyone have a cute short story to share, or just something I can send to make her laugh?

Thanks, have a great day everyone. :D

  • Who knows any cool, random, useless information?

    For example,

If you say 'beer can' in a Jamaican accent, you're really saying 'bacon'

That ' OK ' is a sideways person

That if you ask people what a goatee is, 95% of people will stroke an imaginary one on their chin as part of their response

    That 3.14 backwards spells pie?

Like MLIA quality. :) Thanks, have a great, average day.

    Have a great day. :D

  • Teens: What's your favorite part about Yahoo! Answers?

    I'm just wondering.

I'm kinda bored. I actually.. Don't? Have homework tonight! :D

I guess my favorite part is that people can't judge you by your looks, popularity status, or disabilities.

Like, if someone who had a higher status at their school were to answer a question rudely or snobbish, most likely they'd be thumbed down.

While people who don't have very many friends (if they had a good personality, of course) could just be themselves online.

    I dunno, I just like that. :D

    What about you?

P.S. -> Witty trolls kind of amuse me, too. :D

  • Anyone who lives in the UK - please look?

So here in America, we are pretty much obsessed with British accents, we think they're amazing.

So a few of my friends (or as you'd say, fellow chaps) were wondering if you enjoy speaking in American accents, or any other accent as much as we do. :D

    Just wondering..

    Have a good night, everybody!

  • How do I stop my hair from falling out?

Okay, so I'm not like, balding or anything, but it seems everytime I run my fingers through my hair, there's always a huge clump of hair in my hand. Is there any way I could prevent my hair from falling out, or any products I could buy?

    Thanks in advance :)

  • Have any witty responses?

My friend has 'honesty box' on facebook, where anyone of her friends could say anything they wanted, and they would stay anonymous. However, someone replied 'I think you should go die. No one likes you.' in her inbox. Obviously she doesn't care a bit, people who say that sort of thing are usually the ones unliked in the first place. Ha ha, so we're going to respond with a clever response that basically states she doesn't care, and that she laughs at their so-called theory. Any ideas? We've been up since 4am, hardly any creativity juices left.

  • What was the name of the kid who How to Save A Life was made for?

How to Save a Life by The Fray was about a 17 year old drug addict that Isaac Slade (the lead singer) worked with at a summer camp. However, I don't think Isaac has EVER mentioned his name in any interview or article. Is there anyone who knows?

Like, 'If this page has 500,000 fans, I will name my child Batman'

Something like that. I feel like becoming a fan of something spontaneous today. Thanks in advance. :D

I had to type up a list of 54 definitions of math terms for geometry, I was doing it on Facebook since my Microsoft Word was not working. I selected all, and went to my email to print it off, but my internet crashed! Is there anyway I could recover my homework?
