  • Food for dog medications?

I need something very tasty to mix a feed through medication for dogs into. Yesterday he was super hungry (hadn't eaten in more than 24 hours) so even through he sneered at the chicken n rice (with meds) he ate it. Today it was like pulling teeth to get him to eat it and he didn't eat all of it (which is a problem when ur trying to ensure they get a full dose). I was trying to stay away from anything that would upset his belly because that is what the meds are for (gastroenteritis). Any suggestions would be excellent since he has to eat one more dose tomorrow morning. I pulled up the rest of his food he's not getting anything else edible until he finishes the dose from today. Oh I even tried letting the other dogs near him because he usually gets competive and will scarf his food so the other dogs don't get it (that didn't even work) he was going to let them have it...... any suggestions on getting him to eat the last dose of powder tomorrow morning would be wonderful.

  • Static electricity and your dog's coat?

My dog has a vest and a back pack that he wears and static builds up on it and shocks him as he trots around. He has poodle fur so it's a lot like human hair in the winter. I need to line his "clothes" with a fabric that won't build up static as badly as say nylon. I also need something lightweight as he is very hot-natured like a Huskey. Can anyone make suggestions, because i've been using static guard on his clothes and it's not that effective and i worry about it damaging his skin or coat. Which fabric linings would be less likely to shock him and not make him hot. Thanks so much for any suggestions you have.

  • static electricity and fabric?

I need to find a low weight (or cool) fabric that doesn't cause static with friction. I'm making a dog blanket and my poodle seems to get shocked a lot when he moves around with it. I need a different type of lining material that won't make him hot while helping to keep his coat from producing static with his blanket. Static guard helps but doesn't last very long (and I worry about damage to his coat and skin). Fabric softener and dryer sheets don't really help either. Any suggestions are appreciated.

  • What to eat when you don't "want" anything?

I recently started a new med for anxiety/depression and now I no longer seem to want food. Nothing sounds all that appealing anymore, even my favorites. I recognize the medication induced lack of appetite because I had it back when i was in middle and high school and on stimulants for ADHD. What are some things you eat when you don't feel like eating? For every meal I miss I've been making myself at least drink a carnation instant breakfast. What else should i be doing? For the parents out there, what are u usually able to get your children to eat when they are turning up there nose at everything?

  • Cleaning dog beards between baths?

I have a moutain-doodle that I keep groomed in a modified Schnauzer clip so he has eyebrows n a beard. He tends to stick his whole face in everything (water n food bowls) and his beard gets smelly quickly. We only bathe as needed here (most often for public apperances as a therapy dog), but what can I do besides washing just the beard weekly (he's a 90 lb dog to put in the tub to wash just his face even if he's super cooperative) I don't want to use soap or rinseless shampoo on his face that much. I've heard spraying with dilluted listerne or baking soda scrubbing with a towl n then a lil baby power. In fact this is what we used to recommend to our clients when I worked in the grooming salon anyone else use this or have other tips for me. What's the best way of keeping the beard dry should I try to get him to drink from a water bottle for dogs like they do the show schnauzers? Any tips would be appreciated.......

  • Retraining a horse to go with it's head down?

I recently got a mare that has been a driving horse all her life and then she badly bowed a tendon and was turned out to pasture the past two years to heal and have babies. Yes 2 babies in two years, I saw them both when I picked her up. She's back sound now and ready for some light riding (i'm going to put support boots on her) but she has NO topline. Her entire back is wasted and hollowed, and she either naturally or through driving with an overcheck wants to carry her head very high. How do I go about starting to build those top line muscles in a horse that doesn't know how to carry itself. How to I get her to start dropping her head down and teaching herself how to carry herself more correctly. She's going to be a trail horse for my husband so she really doesn't have to learn to carry herself in a dressage type frame other than it'd be good for her. I'm mainly trying to get her to lose the 'broodmare' look and develop enough topline to help keep her sound for longer.

  • turning out mares with stallions?

Besides gelding my stallion can anyone think of a way I can put one other mare out with him and not have her get bred. If i got a turn-out sheet with a large tail cover does anyone think that would work. Or should stallions just never be housed with mares unless you want a foal. If a foal happened I wouldn't be completely upset and I'd prolly keep the foal, but with the economy and over-breeding I'd rather not have one in the first place. My reasons for wantin to keep them together is that this specific mare is the last one in the pecking order and the stud (who is the least stud acting stallion I've ever seen) seems lonely. Besides I have a smaller pasture and it would be better to have two pairs in sperate pastures as far as hay needs and maintence wise.

  • Horse keeping in the summer?

Hi everyone I've had horses for 20 years and had experience in compettion as well and know the steps to take to help horses in the heat of the summer. Our compettion horses were kept fit by working before 9am and after 8 pm, given electrolytes, and had access to stalls and fans, we always kept buckets of water ring side and sponged and hosed down immediatly after classes and would remove bridles so they would drink water from buckets. I'm married and retired from showing and recently had a small pony show up at my house. The people could no longer keep him so he came to me. I've only had him for like 10 days and haven't gotten him a run-in up. His last property had deep shade (pine forest) and wading ponds. Now he's in a 60X 100 foot lot with only one tree and not really deep shade. He has plenty of water and two types of mineral salt block and he gets free choice hay at night when it's cool. It's suppose to hit 100 degrees the next few days with at least 80% humidity. How worried should i be that he doesn't have a run in? I've taken his at rest, cooler tempature vitals so i have a base line of what should be average for him so i can spot trouble quickly if he has it. And i plan to stock up on ice in my deep freeze and add ice to his stock tank and to sponge him with if it gets real bad. He hasn't been worked with and i don't trust him to tie, should i take him from his secure pen during the heat of the day and risk tying him in the shade or just let him stand under the shadow of his one little tree and check him every thrity mintues during the heat of the day? What would y'all do if he was urs.

  • Putting weight on a hard keeper in the winter?

So yeah i have an impressive bred qh mare she's 19 this year. Anyway we've had her for like ten years now and she's always been tough to keep weight on but the last few winters especially. We feed free choice timonthy hay year round and some grain with a rotational deworming schedule. All our other horses (five other mares are of good weight or a lil hefty) but she stays about 350 lbs under weight. The vet has checked her and hasn't found any problems, we've had her sedated and done her teeth and they werren't really that bad. Yet every winter her rear is green stained, she's thin and she passes a lot of un digested feed. We've tried sweet feed, high fat feed, rice bran, and purina senior complete feed and still nothing changes. She clears up a lil on beet pulp but never really gains the weight back. Does anyone have any ideas of why she's like this or what we could do to get her processing her food better and feel out through her top line?

  • Pet med websites? Scam or good wholesale products?

My vet refuses to write me a prescription for heartworm preventive for my dogs (yes they've tested heart worm negative), because he says the websites like petmeds express, dr fosters and smith and exclusively pet sale after market or black market products that will be less effective or dangerous for my pets. I think they are just trying to make a profit pushing their meds and don't want me buying wholesale. We are a military family and i had found a really good deal on heartworm preventive online.... What does everyone think, do the websites sale aftermarket stuff? If u do use a website how did u get ur vet to write a prescritpion for you?

  • roses (something very hardy)?

I'm wanting to add roses to my landscape not only for eye appeal but for security. I want to plant some Beautiful very hardy roses under my windows so anyone or anything that would try to get up to the window would have to go through some very nice size thorns first. What are some roses that you can plant and forget (for south east NC), I suck at roses. So I need something, to grow almost weed-like, with large thorns and still pretty. Would u recommend climbers, trees, shrubs or the regular like rose bush for planting under 6-12 foot windows? Extra bonuses would be a patriotic name or something that would attract nectar feeders. I love the Jeken, perkin names for their roses, but I have never tried growing them. Any suggestions or links to specific roses u recommend would be soooooo very helpful. Thanks to all the rose growers out there.

  • Should I feel guilty/horrible for clipping my conure's wings?

When i first bought my nanday as a four year old he wasn't clipped and I left him unclipped for about the first two weeks I had him. When I would put him on his house or playstand to play he would only stay there a little while and then he would fly off. He was often flying hard into walls and cabinets. I was worried he would get hurt or break a bone slamming into things so I took him to a bird vet to have him trimmed. The vet did a good job and he glides down if he falls off something but he doesn't produce lift with his wings. He is much happier to stay where I put him when he's clipped. This is good because when he's not clipped and flys into something and ends up on the floor my beagles want him. So I like that he stays where I put him to play. I also roll his house out side on my front porch during pretty days when I'm home to watch him. I worry about him somehow managing to get out or get loose if he's not clipped. His flight feathers have come back in and he's once again very aware that he has wings. I feel horrible taking him to be redone but it scares me to think of having him flighted around my dogs. Am I cruel for keeping him clipped or is it really the only choice I have? He has a swing that he plays with and flaps his wings on and his cage is like two or three times the recommend size, so he gets lots of exercise. Plus I do handle him a lot, especially knowing that he's clipped. Should I go ahead and make his next appointment get him done and feel guilty (but worry free) or should I let him keep his wings and be a happy but possibly short lived flighted Conure.

  • List of FAVORITE parrot toys?

I'm trying to make a list of the beyond super fun parrot toys. Plus i just find it interesting how different birds love different things. So if you could please list the favorite toy(s) or toy type of ur bird and what type bird it is. Also if u like u can post a link to a picture or store add for that toy. I have only had my conure since December and find it frustrating having to find what works best. Like some of the most expensive toys tear up super easily (even when they aren't designed for shredding) and some of the most fun looking ones my bird doesn't give a second glance. U can also post any toy disasters like unsafe toys u know of, or toys u bought and where unusable in less than 24 hours. Anyone else completely addicted to buying bird toys? I'm boreder-line complusive about it, because I love seeing my bird's reaction to a new or different toy and love to showcase his intelligence. I bought a forging toy that i figured might be too hard for him (it was hard for me, I can't help i'm blonde) and he'd figured it out within two or three days, they are amazing.

  • To supplement or not to supplement? molting parrots?

I did look through the other molting questions before posting, i didn't come across what i wanted to know. My 4 year old nanday conure Echo seems to be molting the whole back of his head. Which doesn't surprise me since he was a sympathy buy from a bad pet store three months ago. He was on a seed only diet and had ancient looking toys with him and no where to bathe. First thing he did after getting a better water dish was take a bath and have a through preen. His feathers have been improving but now it seems he's got pin feathers coming in all in the back of his neck. He seems fine though extremely itchy. Is there anything i can do or give him, besides access to full spectrum light to help his molting. I have tried giving him the dried egg supplement for molting and breeding birds but he doesn't like it. He loves being rubbed right now but i'm afraid of hurting or damaging a blood/pin feather. He's always preening me (a bit rougher than he typically does, like he wants me to scratch harder) should i really dig at the sheathes on the open feathers for him or just trust them to dissolve naturally?

  • Does Your conure/parrot have funny eating habits?

Do you know how lil kids will only eat like their favorite color skittles in a pack? I've got my conure on Zupreem Conure diet (with a few seeds and fruits and veggies and treats ect), but he only eats the green, yellow and orange pellets. He leaves the red and purple ones in his dish. Should i encourage him to eat those by waiting to change his food cup or just ignore it and act like he doesn't do that? Is this weird for parrots or are they all kinda quirky and smart like that. He's really smart in general, he's one of the fairly decent talking nanday's and is ALWAYS into something.

  • high performance dogs + feeding?

I have two beagle mixes and since we moved out in the country and they run our property they have been losing weight. I switched them to a higher performance feed which seemed to help some and they had just been dropping fat and toning muscle but now one of them is really looking lean. Like greyhound or thoroughbred lean. Should i switch to a different brand of food or what sorta things can i add to their regular dog food to bulk them up. What do like working sheep dogs or racing grey hounds eat? They were on Eukanaba Adult maintenance, then we went to their brand of adult performance. They are the most fit and healthy as i've ever seen them in seven years, i'd just like to put about 3 pounds on the one and maintain her despite her working level.

  • ideal parrot temperature?

I need to know safe housing temperatures for pet parrots. Specifically a nanday conure. I was keeping my house between 68 and 70 degrees F but i recently went to the doctor for asthma symptoms and he said i had to keep it no higher than 60 degrees at night. I went and bought Echo a heat lamp which he loves but i didn't want to run it all the time especially like if i'm not home. I've got it about 65 today and even i think it's a lil chilly. Should i put it up to like 68 during the day and then turn it down and turn on his lamp at night. What do you think? Any advice and references or sources would be very much appreciated.

  • things that harm concures?

I recently got a nanday concure, he was sorta a rescue from a horrible pet store and while i don't have much bird experience you couldn't get worse than the conditions he was in. He seems pretty healthy, and i know things like avocados and stuff. What toys not to give and how to 'conure proof' your home. I bought a really good conure book so i think i'm doing ok, i'm just concerned about fumes. My kitchen and living room are combined for prolly at least a 600 + sq ft room and i have him sitting on the dividing counter between my kitchen and living room so he can see us all the time. I'm always careful to turn on fans when i'm cooking. Can things like running my dishwasher, a regular gas stove/oven and rotten smells from the trash kill him. Is having a cat in the house really going to give him the cat virus and kill him? Also how much is a mature nanday suppose to weigh. He was on a stricky seed diet and i'm now slowly switching him over to an extruded food diet with some seed and fresh fruit mixed in each day, i don't know what a healthy bird is suppose to feel like so i figure if someone can tell me then i can get a postage scale and weigh him every few days. Echo is a great bird i just want to give him the best life he can have.
