What do you think about short wedding dresses and long bridesmaid gowns?

I'm still in the thinking stages, but I've always wanted to get married on a beach in a short dress (knee length or just above). The thing is, my MOH doesn't like showing off her legs and would probably prefer to wear a long dress. Do you think that would look strange? What about leggings under a short bridesmaid dress? Tacky? Any opinions welcome.

Update:

MOH has had major surgery on her legs in the past and is very self-conscious about her scars. If she says she doesn't want to wear a short dress, I'm not going to make her

Update 2:

I should also mention that I personally don't think her scars are that noticeable. Otherwise I wouldn't even think of a short dress.

Update 3:

Lol.. I hate the leggings look as well, but I'm willing to compromise. I want this wedding to be on the beach--like in sandals, and running around drunk in the sand afterwards. I'm not into the idea of a big formal thing, so that's why I want a short dress. :-)

Update 4:

Thanks for all the responses. I'm probably not going to have any other bridesmaids, so it's all up to her. The David's Bridal link was really helpful--I think she'd go for something like that. The trouser suits are a good idea, too. She looks really sexy in hers!

I don't think I can pick a best, so this one's going to go for a vote....

IMO you should let the bridesmaids choose dresses that they feel comfortable in. Most bridesmaids hate the experience because they hate the dresses.

I saw a very pretty wedding at the state park on the beach last summer. Bride had long gown, very small train. She looked cool as a cucumber in the sleeveless, tank top dress. Waist length veil. She walked down a paper aisle that was picked up afterwards.

Bridesmaids had long dresses too. Mothers didn't.

I think for the direct wedding party, all the same length would be best. Mothers of Bride & Groom can go with whatever they choose, and that would look right.

Groom and his party need to also think about how heavy of a material their clothes are made of. Don't want them sweltering in the sun.

I do not think barefoot is a good idea. What if someone seriously cuts their foot by stepping on glass or tin in the sand? Wouldn't that ruin the whole occasion?

A long flowy dress maybe with alot of gauze (think bathing suit cover up) would be beach appropriate for MOH or even a hawaiian moo moo type dress as well. It doesn't matter that you don't match. The bride is always wearing something different from everyone else!!! :) It sound like such a fun type of wedding. After all shouldn't this be the fun beginning of the rest of all your lives together? Be comfortable, love what each of you are wearing, toast your creative, uniqueness and independant style! Laugh your heads off and have lots of hugs and kisses to go around. I wish most of the bride I work with looked at their day with a fun attitude! A bridezilla you are not!! Best wishes and .........can I come?!! :)

First let me say you are a very considerate bride. Second have you thought about chiffon pants. Jim Hjelm used to have separates and one of the bottoms was a pair of pants. I don't know if he still does, I couldn't find them, but talk to a bridal shop about it. Click on the link below and scroll down you'll see three pants outfits, in the right color I think they would look great (without the jacket). The jacket makes it too MOB. I definitely wouldn't go with leggings. Also if you wear a short dress and she wears chiffon pants that would look fine. The only time I say it's your wedding is when we're discussing the brides clothing. It's your wedding wear what you like. Good luck.

First of all, not to be critical, but no leggings. That's a style that's bound to come and go (hopefully go sometime very soon) and I'm sure the bridemaids would like to have the idea that "maybe" they could wear the dress agian.

As far as the bride's gown, I just can't imgaine a bridal gown that isn't long. It seems like a age old tradition. Of course you could get own with a removeable train to take off at the reception, but unless this is your 2nd or 3rd weddding, I would stick with a traditional dress. Bridal gowns are so beautiful you don't want to ruin the look of the dress.

If you have any questions feel free to email me at jewishmeanie@yahoo.com. Just remind me what you are emailing about because I loose track. Either way, congrats and best of luck! Don't get too caught up in the details.. its supposed to be the best day of your life!

Short wedding dresses are the best thing ever! you don't have to carry around 30 lbs of fabric all day long. Cheaper to store, dry clean, and keep if you want as well.

but if you are having a beach wedding you won't need the

Leggings. Not everyone looks good in spandex. :)

    - it is hard enough walking in sand barefoot so why not just dump the whole Shoe idea all together?

I think if you are going to wear a short dress then the MOH needs to wear a short dress too, how about looking at some tea length dresses. Definitely no leggings. Congrats.

All dresses the same length, I think differing lengths would look wrong. All short or all long. I like tea length, or just below the knee, if not floor length. No leggings. Perhaps opaque hose.

It may be your day, but have considerations for the girls' feelings and don't make her wear something she will feel shows her scars, even though they are probably not that noticeable.

I think you can definitely pull off having a short/tea length dress for yourself and having your bridesmaids wear a long dress. There are lots of long, chiffony dresses you can get in a light color that will look appropriate for a beach wedding. I've attached an example - this dress is short in front, then tiers long in back, so it kind of is the best of both worlds. It can hide most of her legs, but still look short in front so it'll fit with your theme. Good luck!

If it's a beach wedding, stockings and/or long bridesmaid dresses would look a little out of place. It's your wedding. You should pick the gowns...a lot of bridesmaids have to wear things they wouldn't normally wear. Don't be rude, just say this is what you want and would like her to consider.

    Step away from the leggings!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

The MOH should go with your wishes, but if she is really uncomfortable then perhaps your bridesmaids could wear light trouser suits instead of dresses?

I think the dresses should all be the same length, or the bride's dress should be full length and the bridesmaids' dresses short.
