What's the best kind & brand of pickup for acoustic guitar overall(price and sound quality)?

This will depend on your guitar and your budget. If you want a pickup to attach to an existing guitar, the best thing is to take your guitar in to a shop and try some of the attachable pickups within your budget - they can sound a little different on one guitar to the next, hence it's best to take yours down there. If you have more to spend, you can look at the more expensive ones that go under the bridge (but are more difficult to fit).

If you're looking at getting a new guitar with a pickup, I would recommend Takamine, they have reliable pickups that perform well for live sounds, with good battery life, built-in tuner and eq. I've been using one for 5 years and sound engineers have commented on the clarity of the sound.
