My dog has loose bowels and I'm concerned because she's been like this for 4 days.?
I took my dog to a doggy daycare/boarding. She was there for 5 days. The 4th day, they gave her a bath. That's the day she started having loose bowels. They gave her 2 different type of treats, one was frosty paws which I think is doggie ice cream, and the other was a smoothie. It's some type of frozen sugar free treat for dogs. When I picked my dog up, she had loose bowels, I thought she would be over it in a day or two but that was not the case. She could not pass a solid bowel movement. On the 4th day, I took her to the vet. He said that it was blood in her stool and that her white blood cells were high. Could it be that the treats the dog daycare gave her messed her up this bad? Do you think that being around other dogs and drinking behind other dogs may have caused her problems as well? Also, would you take your dog back to the doggie daycare. I really liked the place and she enjoyed being around other dogs but it's not worth jeopordizing her health. What do you think?
First, I would like to thank all you for your suggestions. THANK YOU VERY MUCH!
The vet didn't tell me a diagnosis. There were no parasites seen. He gave her an injection for vomiting and an antibiotic injection. He gave me medication to give her for 2 weeks, a liquid to give her for 3 days and i/d canine can food for her diet for 2 weeks. He said that's all she can eat. That's her breakfast, lunch, dinner and snacks. I asked him if I should be worried about the high white blood cell count and the blood in the stool and he said to try what he's recommending at this point and if it works, then she should be fine. He said 80% of the time this solves the problem. If it doesn't get better, then he would have to do more bloodwork, x-rays, etc . So, he really didn't comment on how she contracted whatever it is she has. He didn't give me a diagnosis. He did do a fecal exam and it showed blood in the stool and that's all the information I received.

You didn't say whether or not the vet gave a possible diagnosis or treatment. Have you changed dog food on her? Some dogs' tummies don't take kindly to a sudden change in diet and it can cause several days of loose bowels until their system gets used to the food. If this is the case, then it just might be coincidence it happened the same time you took her to doggie daycare.
Whew! You had a lot of us worried that your vet just kind of shrugged his/her shoulders and gave you an "I don't know" look! Stick with the treatment you were given and keep a close eye on her. If she seems to be worsening, take her back to your vet or take her to another for a second opinion. Good luck!

The higher white cell count can just be that she has had a wee virus or is just feeling a bit run down in general from the loose motions, have you skipped a meal since she has been like this?
If it were my dog I would starve him at least 24 hours (if a toy breed put sugar in the water) then very small feeds several times a day of scrambled egg including the dried and powdered shell - I use a mortar n pestle, the calcium content in the shell firms stools and the egg protein is very highly digestable, dont add milk to cook it though, or frozen raw chicken wings, this gives something to chew so the stomach gets ready to digest then the bone content firms the stools and the chicken is easy to digest.
If you feed dried food or tinned meat for her normal diet, I would go with the eggs and then when the stools are fine you can just gradually add more of her usual food through, until thats all she gets again.
Just watch out, in case she starts coughing, if she does give childrens dry cough medicine as this can be kennel cough (highly contagious) If its the cough, then she cant go back to daycare for 4 weeks, otherwise I wouldhave her right back as soon as she is better.
I would ask them not to feed her treats, other than boiled chicken at the daycare though, or those provided by you, that you know dont disagree with her.
Hope this has helped you
PS the advice I have given should sort out any blood on the stools, thats not usually something to worry about, if it is blood through the stools then it will apear as though black is running through, then you should take her straight to vet and tell them about the blackness running through stools as this is an internal bleed and is digested blood, in most cases.

When the white blood cell number is increased this means that there is most likely an infection. If there is blood feces then it might be parvo, cocidia, etc. It sounds like your dog is current with all its vaccinations. You might want to get a second opinion, because when there is blood in the feces then something is wrong. All dogs and cats are lactosintolerant (sp?) after they are weaned. It probably doesn't have lactose in it but the frosty paws and dog smoothy might have caused it as well.
It is hard to say if you should bring her back to that boarding place. If she does turn out to have caught a virus from the place then I would not bring her back. If your dogs problem is not caused by a virus then it is up to you whether you wan to take her back.

Did your vet tell you she picked up any parasites???
Food changes will cause stomach upset and will cause in some dogs intestinal irritation too. enough to cause sever reactions like loose to very runny stools.
I have heard that if the day care doesn't clean their facility well enough it can become a hot bed for coccidia and other intestinal worm problems passed from dog to dog. I would talk to the day care and ask them not to feed your dog anything with out your permission. If your dog still gets sick then I'd stop going there.

Blood in stools always puts me on red alert for Parvo but if your vet has ruled this out then its what she ate at the centre. I'd be wary of using it again because if she's been ill because of them, is their food hygiene up to standard? If you feel safe letting her go back there just insist that whatever she eats and drinks is bought in by you, that way you'll know she's getting clean water, from her own bottle, from her own bowl and that her lunch or treats are what you give her, from home. I know you can't guarantee that she won't drink or eat their stuff but if its making her ill then its best if she's kept away and seek out another doggie day care! Give her one hard boiled egg, broken up small, it'll 'bind' her bowels and stop the runs. Best of luck to you both.

you took her to the vet. and he said blood in stool, white cell high. did you ask him what it was, question him about it? what did he tell you? it could be something she picked up before doggy daycare and she was incubating it and it didn't show before. in this case she might have infected other dogs.
without knowing what the vet. said it was it is hard to know as blood in stool is a sign of many different problems and high white cell count just means her body is fighting what ever it is.
the treats that they gave her are fine for dogs and i doubt that being around other dogs had anything to do with it. i would take her back, the socializing is great for dogs and you said she enjoyed it.

Does she eat well still? Does she seem to mope around or not be as playful? If neither of these have to do with her I would just think that had trouble digesting the treats so I would reccomend that when you take her for walks to just walk. No running or strenuous exercise until it gets back to normal. This is actually common in dogs that have eaten the same treats for a while or relatively young dogs. Hope she gets better! :)

Usually if it's from the treats, it would'nt last 4 days. What did your vet diagnose? Did he give her any meds?
