What is the use and purpose of journal voucher. How does it function. Is it like a journal entry. Thanks people.

    A journal voucher is a docket that is similar to a credit note or invoice. A journal voucer records the details such as accounts to be debited or credited, reason for the tranransaction to be recorded as a journal. It would also contain details such as Department No., Prepared by, Approved by, and authorisation code etc. Information from these vouchers are than recorded into the relevant information systems, may it be acommercial accounting system such as MYOB or a public finance information systems such as used by Governments as journal entries. These vouchers could be for payments, reciepts, reversal of entries for correction purposes, etc. These documents are prevalently used in Government departments and Government statutory bodies and are filed in registries for future references.
