Which is better, Carfax.com or DMV.org?

Im in the market for a new used car and Im not spending a couple thousand dollars on a lemon, so I would like to check up the history on each car to help me make a decision. The thing is, I did the free history check on carfax, and it gave me 11 listings. I found DMV.org and entered the same VIN number, and found 17 listings for the same car. What gives? Which site is more reliable?

I would think the DMV site is, but car fax is more well known.

Update:

If they have the same access to car details, then why is DMV listing more records than carfax is for the same car?

Carfax is the largest and most popular vehicle history site.

In spite of the name DMV.org is not a state DMV site. It is a repository/clearing house for automotive related info. Probably make their money from advertising. I don't think they have a car history service. It was probably an ad placed there by Autocheck (owned by experian) or another service. Autocheck is the 2nd largest history service.

I don't know any way to reasonably determine which is best over a large sample of cars. Both are good. They both have access to and accumulate the same public records.
