An idea to stoping car chases?

With all the car chases that goes on, why don’t they get 30 days in jail for every stop sign they run, 90 days for every red light they run, 180 days for every time the cross into on coming traffic. 1 year for everything they hit. Do you think that might deter them from running?

If they did that ON TOP OF spending time for charges of "Felony Evading" and other crimes committed in the total chase, I'd agree. That may not deter them, but it might add to the hurt they'll feel for having done it. And why not 90 days for every stop sign they run, and 180 days for red lights, and two years for crossing into oncoming traffic, and five years each for everything they hit. The car chases are very serious. Charge them accordingly. That also includes time for endangering the lives of the officers, EACH of them in the chase, and the citizens they endanger, EACH of them. And life without parole for anyone and everyone they injure or kill. That might make car chases worth an additional 10 years above what they get now. They didn't mind risking our lives. Why should I worry about taking a big portion of theirs. God Bless you.

You have to remember that in real life, the criminal class is not very smart. Some may even be to that kill-myself stage of loserhood. Deterrents can only work on somebody that's got a functioning brain. You have to be able to connect your choices to your future. Stupid people can't easily do that. Suicidal people would never do it.

The only way to stop criminals is to keep them locked up. Did you guys know California spends 10% of its state budget on prisons? Not the justice system, just prisons. I read that last week, and was totally amazed.

How about the cops get a little smarter about it and stop chasing the guy and putting every ones lives in danger? A lot of countries do not allow police to chase people if they exceed a certain speed limit.

I dont think so because they are trying to get away from the cops....then again for the ppl that just want to try it might stop them. Other wise the people that run are just gonna have a shootout with the cops or crash and possibly die...

No, their most likely criminals who already know their going to jail that's why their running. Also the jails are so overcrowded with more serious offenses the would just run their sentence concurrent .
