is it true that limewire is a haven of viruses that could badly affect your computer?

so far, i have had no problems w/ limewire, but a computer technician told me that limewire could sooner or later give me a faulty computer, which could null the warrant of my laptop in case something goes wrong w/ it. is there any truth in this?

Any time you download files to your computer using any program, not just Limewire, you risk that the file may be infected. What varies is the degree of risk, depending on the program / site you're using and the files you are after. Pirated movies and music have an inherently higher risk, for example. That doesn't mean every pirated movie file or song is infected, it just means the risk is typically higher.

If your antivirus software is current, all updates are applied and everything is enabled, especially 'scan files on download', you are safer. Notice I didn't say 'absolutely safe'.

Here's where the conversation gets back to 'practise safe computing and have good security tools in place' and you'll be as close to safest as you can get.

Seriously, there's only one way to be guaranteed not to get infected. Never connect to any network (or to another computer) and never put any discs in any drives. That includes USB thumb drives and external hard drives. I'm serious.

Depends where you download it from. If from limewire.com it wont have any viruses, but the stuff that you download from limewire could potentially have viruses attached. So be careful!

I would say that is very true, if you have a warranty, the manufacturers will only cover certain issues. If you download things like limewire, youre basically asking for viruses unless you know what youre doing. Even then you're still at risk..

Bit torrent and other file sharing sites being used to get music and videos with can be total disaster for your Windows machine.

Because they use multiple 'peer contributors' to feed bits & parts of a requested files (music, movies, etc.) back to you, there can never be any kind of certainty about the status of the sender of the file.

Whatever they have = you get.

Once downloaded to your machine, all bets are off about it's safety to open, transfer, use or re-send; and size of a file has little bearing on what it may or may not contain.

To get an idea of how prolific and devastating this can be just look at the number of 'Yahoo Answers> Security' requests for help about virus/spyware.

Most of these Yahoo users are younger & more likely to be using the trendy socializing sites and peer-2-peer services (Limewire, etc.). Hackers know this and target efforts to infect machines by this source (aka 'vector').

You can download ccleaner for free here: http://bit.ly/1Bk5V5C

    First open CCleaner

Go to the Cleaner tab and you will be confronted by a very confusing lineup of checkboxes.

To make this brief, below is my recommended setup:

Under internet explorer check temporary internet files, cookies, and last download location. Most users don't really need this stuff. keep history and bookmarks unchecked, history is a maybe, but you don't want to lose bookmarked sites. You can normally leave Windows Explorer, System, and Advanced alone.

Run CCleaner and it will start deleting files.

afterward it will present you with a list of the files deleted, you really don't need to go through it as it will be several pages long.

The registry cleaner is recommended for slightly more advanced users. Use it after uninstalling programs as they will often leave behind incorrect registry entries.

If you decide to run Registry cleaner then review the items detected and always back up the registry (I keep a folder aside for this)

The Tools tab lets you uninstall programs and set startup programs. Why do you need this if Windows has all of these features? Especially with Vista Home Ed. The windows defender software explorer( startup programs) doesn't pick up some entries (however software explorer is easier to use).

Using CCleaner to uninstall programs and then check for leftover registry entries takes less time.

Under Options you can determine how CCleaner cleans your files. I leave this alone.
