Why this insistence on so many names being "girls' names?

Does it drive anyone else nuts that people on this site keep saying that perfectly legitimate boys' names are actually girls' names? I've seen people claim this about names like Emerson and Quinn, neither of which was used as a girl's name at all really until the last 10 years. I'm not talking about really girlish sounding names such as Leslie and Kelly, where 99% of the people with the names are boys. I'm talking about names that were usurped as girls' names, and now some people are insisting are not boys' names at all.

Sorry about the rant, but I'm just wondering if this bugs anyone else.

Update:

lulu, I'm not judging other people's name choices; I'm just getting sick of hearing people claim that my own sons name--Quinn--is a girl's name.

Yes, it bugs me a lot. I've seen Ryan, Dylan, Logan, Tyler, James & Bryce be used on girls and to me they are strictly boys names. I don't see anything feminine about any of those names. Bryce is my dad and grandpa's name. I dunno... What happened to using actual girls names for girls?

Personally I like Emerson for a girl. That's just my preference. It doesn't really bother me that some people think it should only be used for a boy. The same with Dylan. I would call a girl Dylan because the name is too popular for boys. Riley is another example... I actually like this name for both genders.... I like Jamie for a girl better than a boy....... Quinn I've only ever known as a surname I've never heard of it as a first name so I'm not really sure whether I would call it a boy or a girls name.....Leslie is masculine however Lesley is feminine....Kelly is a popular girls name however I have heard of a boy with the name but I think its unique for a boy.....I've seen Rory on a girl which to me is really masculine and also Logan which to me is also a boys name........... but I don't judge people if thats what they like then that's fine.....if it bothers you a lot then you should just make sure you use a more gender specified name if you have another baby......because they are unisex names....Its just like Lynsey is a popular girls name but started off as a boys name....This is no different to Emerson, Quinn, Dylan, Rory, Logan and Jamie being used on girls.

I understand your point. I think unisex names are great. But I also think if it was a boys name then it should always be considered a boys name and a girls name. Same with girl names.

    Very much agreed.

I mean, since when were Emerson and Quinn girl's names?!?!

I can definitely see Emerson becoming the new Madison, a masculine name that means SON of-, used on poor, helpless little girls.

It depends on what it is.

Ermerson bugs me, but Quinn doesn't sound like just a boys name.

Some boys name's just have a feminin feel to it sometimes.

in the UK, Leslie is a male name - the female is Lesley

why does it bother you that people use names that *you* define as "girly" or "not-girly"? unless you intend to have sex with anyone who you think has a "girly" name, what difference does it make what they choose to call themselves? their life - their choice

the first rule of a civilised person should be: let people be what they want to be, not what you decide they should be, or shouldn't be. - so long as they don't cause harm to another person, what's it to do with anyone else?

I HATE unisex names. Kayden is a boy name, not a girl name. Jordan is a boy name, not a girl name. Boys should have boys names and girls should have girls names.
