    The two things that you need to solve for are speed to and speed from.

    X = speed to LA

    Y = speed to Montreal

    You can relate the two because of your second sentence:

    Y = 1.2X - this shows that the return trip was 20% faster

    Now you can make an equation for the whole trip.

    3000/X + 3000/Y = 8.75

    (the distance divided by the speed equals the time)

    replace the y with its value in x

    3000/X + 3000/1.2X = 8.75

    multiply through by x

    3000 + 3000/1.2 = 8.75X

    8.75X = 3000 + 2500

    8.75X = 5500

    X = 628.57 miles/hour = Speed from Montreal to LA!!!
