Prepping for paint - trim adhesive smeared all over panel?

I'm prepping a door for paint, and I removed the ding guard from the door. It was held on with adhesive.

A razor didn't seem to be working well to remove it, so I gave my wire wheel on my angle grinder a try. All it did was smear the adhesive all over the door. Worse, it too the paint off down to metal in places, so I now have this adhesive on bare metal.

How would I clean this crap off so I won't have adhesion problems when it's time to paint? I tried rags soaked in laquer thinner, but it didn't get the smeared around stuff off.

Thanks!

I would assume you are using wax and grease remover ...so use that with a PLASTIC scraper . Its messy but it works OR go to your paint supplier and get a wheel to remove decals ( it fits on your drill or dye grinder )
