How often should you switch companies?

I've been with my company for slightly over a year now and was wondering what my next career move should be. I hear that you rise faster when you switch companies. Is that true? How soon should you switch? Do you usually get a pay increase?

Stay with a company for at least 2 years before considering a shift. Companies that hire you don't want to see you job hopping within a year of employment. Unless there's a confirmed reason to shift, there's no guarantee a job shift helps (at least not in this economy).

It depends on the company you're in and the skills and experience you acquired. Foe example, rival or new companies that want to kick start quickly like to recruit people with experience in the field and they are usually willing to pay more than experienced companies for the same position. Again, it depends on the company you work in and the company that is looking for people.
