What are the chances of getting a sheltie that doesn't bark alot?

I don't mind barking at the doorbell, etc, I just don't want a dog who barks for no reason or at a blowing leaf. Are most or even all shelties obnoxious barkers?

Update:

Wouldn't clicking and treating everytime they bark reward them for barking?

    ZERO.

We have four shelties, and even with good training (my kids do 4H with them and show them, they're otherwise very well trained and mannerly), they still never shut up. We live on a big property, so it's not that noticeable, but I imagine it could drive one mad if they lived in a more contained setting. There's really nothing for it - training will never totally override the nature of the animal. It's in the breed.

When we had our first sheltie and he was an only dog, the barking wasn't bad and he could easily be calmed down, but when you get more than one dog, especially more than one sheltie or another barker, forget it. They feed off each other. Now we have 6 dogs (4 shelties and two mutts), and the shelties have turned our newest dog, who was abandoned on our property just over a week ago, from an absolutely silent dog into a fence-running, chattering, treat-mongering incessant barker like the lot of them.

They do respond to "hush!" and occasionally (okay, more often than not), "SHUT UP!" but often it takes a few repeats before all of them hear it over their own noise and they finish riling each other into it again after one's stopped.

    training is the key.

The dog may bark a lot of you allow it.

A "quiet" command is a useful tool.

    When they bark say Quiet

treat or click and reward them for stopping.

    It can be done

Shelties do tend to bark but I have known some really nice ones who were well trained and they didnt

The first answer is the best. I recently adopted a rescue dog -- Yorkie/Shih Tzu mix. She barks if a leaf moves. All the available training information that I've read says, pick a word, e.g. quiet, hush, peace... then use that word consistently through training.

Personally, I keep doggie cheese on a table near the door. I say hush & giver her a taste of the cheese.

    Good luck.

Are you marrried to the idea of a Sheltie?

There are breeds that are practically barkless. Basenjis, I think, are reported to be effectively barkless.

I have a rescued greyhound and they really don't bark much. I was at a meetup with 200+ greys and it was dead silent. One time ours barked in his sleep and it scared the crap out of us because we had never heard him bark before. :-)

Well what do u have to worry about? Your a A class trainer. All your dogs are trophie dogs. Remember? Would be anything apparently. By the way dogs run away when they are going to die. Oh I figured it out. My dog attacks the other dog because of the incident when it was. Not because it doesn't have training a$$h013. I don't want my dog to be trained to be a show dog. You go ahead and torture your dog. Dogs are suppose to be mans best friend not doll. M0+h3rfu(k3r!!!
