Can I put koi in a 100 gallon pond?

I just put in a new pond that is more or less 100 gallons. It has one goldfish in there who is a survivor from the old pond. I will also be putting one goldfish and a koi who has lived in a 10 gallon tank for 5-6 years.

I saw a stunning butterfly koi at a pond shop, and I was considering getting him. Would that be too many fish for the pond?

No, not really. Koi get to be really big with some reaching from 2 - 3 feet long.

1,000 gallons is suggested for Koi.

At the 100 gallon level I'd suggest sticking to goldfish.

One koi alone would probably be OK in 100 gallons, possibly two if you had some really excellent filtration, etc., going on. In that same amount of space, you could have about 10 goldfish, max.

Having two koi and two goldfish would put you right on the edge and you would have to be absolutely *scrupulous* in taking care of your water and watching it's parameters for ammonia and nitrite/nitrate build-up. Your fish will likely not reach their full potential in the set-up you are proposing, and may even result in stunting (if not outright disease/death of your fish).

    Hope this helps.

If you were to say a "normal" koi, with good filteration I would say yes but a butterfly one no.

Even with a normal one, in time u would have to think about upgrading your pond or getting rid of it as it will grow too large

one hundred gallons isn't adequate for goldfish or koi. you may get tanks to maintain interior the domicile that may carry lots greater water. try some minnows or such, yet once you insist on goldfish you should pull off 5 fancy goldfish in a one hundred gallon.
