What are these gigantic black bees that love to hang out in my yard?
I live in CA in the San Francisco Bay Area, and there are tons of gigantic black bees that like to hang out around my purple potato bush. There's always at least 5 or 6 of these guys. They're about 1.5 inches long and very thickly built.

probably cicada killers...they are a solitary wasp that live in the ground and has a life cycle in tune with the cicadas..they are around mid summer then gone till this time next year

Sounds like wasps. They are doing you a favor and eating the bugs on the squash.
