Jobs At Disney World?

So I went to Disney for, oh, the sixth time or so in September and, as always, loved it. The potential problem is that I loved it too much. The weather was good, the people were nice, everyone was happy. I've begun to question if I should follow through on a new ambition and see what's cooking in the job market for Disney.

I know there are a few people in this section who have worked at Disney, and I have a few questions:

- Was it difficult to get a job with Disney? I mean, was the process rigorous?

- Did you enjoy working with Disney?

- I would love to work in the parks (Epcot, Magic Kingdom, etc.). If you worked in the parks, what is your reaction? More difficult that people let on? Very enjoyable?

- If I couldn't work in the parks (of course, assuming I got hired), I would like to work in one of the on-site resorts (love Port Orleans). Has anyone here worked in the resorts?

I guess what I really want to know is whether or not you enjoyed it, whether you would recommend working there, and whether or not the process is too painstaking. But, at the end of the day, was it worth it? And, perhaps most importantly, how can I get started?

It WAS easy to get a job at Disney. When I started in August 2007 you basically just walked into the Casting building and you walked out with a full time job. Unfortunately, full time hiring ground to a halt in August 2008. They didn't hire anyone for a while, then they started hiring part time Cast Members. As far as I know, they still aren't hiring very many if any full time Cast Members, but there have been a lot of part time Cast Members hired and some of them have been able to transfer to a full time role after being hired part time. As for the actual current hiring process, I don't know anything about other than that it is completely different from a few years ago.

I love working at Disney, I worked in Merchandise in the Magic Kingdom for two years, then transfered to Monorails for a brief two months, then today I transfered to a Front Desk role at the Contemporary. You can put in for a transfer every 6 months if you don't like were you're at or just want to do something different. If the new job is a higher pay grade, you don't have to wait the 6 months (which is why I was only in Monorails for two months). Walt Disney World (with a few exceptions like Photopass) is a union work site, so transfers are pretty much by seniority, so you might have to wait a while after becoming full time before you can get your first transfer. There's plenty of jobs to do and plenty of room to move up.

I have found working in the park to be easy, but a lot of people hate it. If you really enjoy being around people like I do working in the park will almost be like being payed to play. However, you have to REALLY enjoy being around people, including unpleasant ones. Anyone can have fun working around a lot of happy people, but a very small percentage of guests will be upset, and they will be VERY VERY upset. (Think how upset you would be if you paid what we charge at Disney and had poor service). Occasionally the guest will just be completely out of line, but usually the guest will have a legitimate complaint. In any case, even if they are out of line you need to be able sympathize with them for real, they know if you're faking and it just makes them more mad. If you can't sympathize with people who are completely wrong (and let their behavior roll off your back without it bothering you too much) you'll probably end up hating the job. To be frank, a lot of the very senior Cast Members have bad attitudes of their own which they may not show to the guests but which they will sometimes take out on new Cast Members. I have seen many Cast Members crying backstage after a particularly bad experience with an upset guest or Cast Member.

If you really love people, even the bad apples, you will love working in the parks. Even after a really bad guest experience, you will have a lot of support from your fellow Cast Members (and other guests who saw the incident!) Disney is open seven days a week, including holidays. All of the parks except Animal Kingdom are open late and the Magic Kingdom is sometimes open VERY late. Many, many times, I have finished a closing shift at the Magic Kingdom while the morning people were coming in. When you are new, it's going to be you working those weekends, holidays and late hours. In the past, you could count on the high turnover to move you up on the seniority list pretty quick so you wouldn't stay "new" to long; after one year I was already ahead of over a third of the people on the list. However, with the economy the way it is even people who hate working here aren't quitting, and very few new full timers are being hired, so the seniority list is barely moving.

The benefits are great, for full-time Cast Members Disney has one of the greatest benefit packages around. Medical insurance for a single person is cheap and has low copays. All but one of the plans has no annual or lifetime maximum. All of the plans have no copay on preventive care. This year they upgraded the mental health benefits to the best I've seen anywhere I worked. They have a Dental HMO which is free and has a $0 copay for almost everything except cosmetic stuff, it also has no annual or lifetime maximum, which I have never seen on Dental insurance anywhere else. They have a free vision insurance plan that gives you a free eye exam and glasses (or $159 in contacts) every other year, or you can get a vision plan for $3 a week which gives you the same benefit but annually instead of biennially. There is a health center (the Center for Living Well) in the Epcot Cast Parking lot that provides great primary medical care as well as laboratory services and a pharmacy. I was sick one morning, and not wanting to pay the higher copay for urgent care called to see if I could get a regular appointment. I called at 11AM and they made me an appointment at 3PM the same day! That saved me $35 ($15 primary physician copay versus $50 urgent care). Prescriptions are $2 on my plan at the health center for a 1 month supply, or $4 for a th

I really don't know, but I'll warn you, they pay HORRIBLE and have outrageous demands of their employees. I had a couple of friends that worked down there for a summer and they came back the most bitter people I've ever seen. If you still wanna do it, check out the Disney website for employment opportunities, but I don't know if you'll have much luck since you're under 16.
