What is a good sampler?

I plan to use my electribe mx to control it as the emx doesn't have a sampler. I am looking at the roland sp-404 as a potential choice but i am new to the sampler world. I am looking for a sampler with the trim function(not sure if all have it), and relatively easy operation. I am trying to avoid software samplers, I prefer hands-on when it comes to music making. I am also interested in creating hip-hop beats so I need a sampler that can handle a lot of bass and not sound "wimpy".

i'm getting a sp-404sx for christmas! :D it will be my first sampler so i have been doing some research and most people like the mpc-500 and the esx-1. but i haven't got the money for those plus i like the portability factor of the sp-404sx.
