Yahoo Messenger: What is a dimmed icon next to the contact mean?

A gray face is really offline... a dimmed image or avatar is also offline, but there should be additional information it indicates.

Update:

No, if this indicates a contact is invisible then what is the use of being invisible?

I know detectinvisible.com that is why I said "a dimmed image is also offline."

Yes, it would be nice to have something built into IM to show this. However, you can use a detector to indicate someone's status, such as this one:

It may be, however, that someone could be online and not have loaded Messenger at all.

The contact has once appeared online to you, and then turned invisible. However, the "dimmed" icon turns back to the default gray face after a period of time the contact hasn't appeared back online to you since then. If you want to know how long is the time period, create one more ID and take note of the time you appeared online to your original ID.

My explanation here is not exactly what it is. I only did some experiment because I can't find this topic in the YM help.
