@lil bit~ ummmmm US hasn't backed its currency with gold since 1972. Its "fiat" it has lost 95% of its value since inception in 1913 and there is nothing backing it.

look at it like this the us bases their money off of gold because gold is rare and their for it is valiable so meaning that it is a curency.. it is determend this way by the market it gets confusing but money is basically a note saying you have this much value and 1 dolar 5 dollar and so on and its a simple way a representing a value of worth..try wikipedia.com for a better answer imight have spelled wikipedia and type in your question in the search feature...hope this helped

money is now the main currency recognized world wide.
if you were to go to a shop and try to pay with anything else. they would decline.
if you were to try to get paid for doing a job with something else. they would most likely decline. and pay in money.
it is overall the most powerful and useful source of wealth.
