Is Blake a purebred lab or a mix?

On 9/9/11 I found a big black dog on a bridge and after convincing him I was ok and getting him home he's fallen in love with me. Got in contact with his owners and long story short he is officially my dog.

He's 8 months old and looks like a pure black lab, acts exactly like an adolescent lab, loves water, but he's already 26" at the shoulder and 80lbs (he should be about 100lbs when full grown and 27"-28") which seems a little big for a normal lab.

I've heard anything from he looks like a purebred to rottie/lab, pitt/lab, bully/lab, and even a dane/lab. If anything, I'd say rottie since in bright sun light he has reddish/brown where a rottie would (but that can happen in pure labs too on occasions). He's too tall to be a pitt, bully, or boxer lab mix for sure.

Anyway, the shelter the people got him from at 7 weeks old said he was a pure lab but we're not sure. Everything about him screams american black lab except his size. Just looking for opinions here. The vet tech said lab when I took him to get fixed the other day. No matter what he's overly loved and spoiled already. Just needs a bit of obidience training (may get him into some therapy dog training classes eventually cause he definately has some great potential for that!)

(sorry there's so many pics, he's very photogenic and we wanted a good picture of him for found signs when we took those!)

Update:

I'm not a show dog kind of person. Rather not have to worry about all that plus being fixed is better health wise (plus we want to get him to the dog park without worrying about him having babies with random dogs)

We've been saying he's just a lab. This is really just for the fun of it and to see what others think. Not gonna change my opinion of him. We have 3 mutts that we know exactly what they are. Purebred or not he's very loved by us and his new pack

Update 2:

Gata, did I say it mattered what breed he is? I clearly stated he's loved no matter what he is. This is just for the hell of it. Mutt or purebred he's an amazing and sweet dog. I don't care what he is. We're all just curious about people's opinions and eventually (after paying off his vet bill for the nuetering) I'm gonna invest in a DNA test for the fun of it. And he was adopted then found on the streets since his other owners didn't want him anymore (long story there).

I agree adopting saves lives and should be done but there's also the point dogs in pet stores need saving too. They get rid of them one way or another. JMO

i see no strong indications of other breeds in him, thats not too say there arent any, its just so say you likely will never know, because without background you can neither gurantie it, but he looks like a lab too me, looks like and are arent always the same case as you never know with mutts, they can look just like one parent , or just the other, or anything inbetween

but there is no strong signs of other breeds in him, to indicate that he is clearly a mix, and no the picture in nr 1 do not scream rottweiler too me, it speaks of a young male who havent fully developed, though once he grow older of course that may bring out signs, a dog is mostly grown in heigth at the age he is, but males are rarely fully developed body wise even so and often broaden out

but as of now he just look like a young male lab too me, every breed have some variation as well, something thats important too remember, they dont look like clones of eachother

Something about his face in the first picture is screaming Rottweiler to me.

At the same time, it is very possible that he is purebred but simply not from a great breeding line. Because Labs are so overbred by backyard breeders and puppymills, the quality of dog you may find (if it isn't from a good breeder) has decreased a lot. So he very well could be a pure Lab.

I have heard about DNA tests to see what breeds are in a dog, but I haven't researched them myself so I don't know how reliable they are - just a thought if you are really interested.

I work with show quality Labs (at dog shows) and he seems to fit a lot of the characteristics, but more as a field style Lab. You mentioned "American" but this term really isn't used much anymore. Of course you can have a European dog imported, but if it is show quality there it is show quality here. Usually, people use the term "field bred" for those lankier Labs that are used more often for working and field trials (though a couple of my show Labs are also titled from hunt trials). I just wanted to let you know.

W/O papers you cannot be 100% certain (even DNA tests won't always be accurate). But Labs are supposed to be 65-85 for males fully grown. Your Lab looks more like the field type which may be a bit taller and heavier then the ones you see in the show rings.

It won't really matter much since you have no papers - you SHOULD neuter him by a year old and then you can use him for field work or agility, obedience training. He looks all Lab to me.

Unfortunately, there's no sure way to ever know, regardless of photos. I assume since you got him fixed you have no interest in turning him into a show dog, either.

If you just want to know for piece of mind, there's really nothing wrong with claiming he's a lab. I have a "Boston Terrier" that is actually 1/8th Jack Russell, but no one knows the difference, because he looks just like one, so we just call him a Boston.

By the way..that's a gorgeous dog, whatever he is!

Cute dog, He looks just like my cousins rottie/lab cross so he could have some rottie in him, in some of the pics it looks like there are some minor rottie resemblance in his face to me.

If your really curious you can get a DNA test done, a friend of mine had to get one to prove his dog wasn't a pittbull cross because they are a restricted breed where we live.

I think that he is a mixed breed. I have owned a Lab before and know people with a Rottweiler. It looks like a Lab/Rottweiler. He is nice looking for a mix. What is his name?

I've owned plenty or Rottweilers and I don't see it in your dog. It looks like a lab possibly purebred.

Does it matter what breed it is?

I do not understand why people only buy breeds.

    Please adopt, do not buy.

    Breeders kill shelter dog chances

I died today. You got tired of me and took me to the shelter. They were overcrowded and I drew an unlucky number. I am in a black plastic bag in a landfill now. Some other puppy will get the barely used leash you left. My collar was dirty and too small, but the lady took it off before she sent me to the Rainbow Bridge . Would I still be at home if I hadn’t chewed your shoe? I didn’t know what it was, but it was leather, and it was on the floor. I was just playing. You forgot to get puppy toys. Would I still be at home if I had been housebroken? Rubbing my nose in what I did only made me ashamed that I had to go at all. There are books and obedience teachers that would have taught you how to teach me to go to the door. Would I still be at home if I hadn’t brought fleas into the house? Without anti-flea medicine, I couldn’t get them off of me after you left me in the yard for days. Would I still be at home if I hadn’t barked? I was only saying, “I’m scared, I’m lonely, I’m here, I’m here! I want to be your best friend.” Would I still be at home if I had made you happy? Hitting me didn’t make me learn how. Would I still be at home if you had taken the time to care for me and to teach manners to me? You didn’t pay attention to me after the first week or so, but I spent all my time waiting for you to love me. I died today. Love, Your Puppy ***Please forward this to everyone, its time to stop animal abuse***
