It looks a little better on your resume that you actually finished the equivalent of a high school diploma. Actually for just high school graduate level it shows more than just graduating normally, it shows that you left, but then thought enough of it to go back and finish on your own.
But I think the real value of a GED is that now you can go to a community college and gather some real marketable skills. So it's not so much a major achievement as a step in the right direction.
