How do you become a Psychiatrist or neuropsychologist?

I was looking into these careers once i get outta the military. How long does it take on average and what is required? I want to work in hospitals not private counseling clinics

It depends on what kind of work you want to do. I would suggest scheduling informational interviews with some mental health providers at all levels to ask questions about their education in specific, internships, thesis/dissertation, day to day job tasks. Here is a bask outline:

Master level: Req: Undergrad plus masters (+/-7 years) Counselor/Therapist/Psychotherapist (all the same thing). Perform counseling services, can be intake coordinators at hospitals or large clinics as well.

Doctoral level: Req: Undergrad plus doctoral (+/-9 years) Psychologist (PhD or PsyD). Perform counseling, testing, etc

Doctoral level PLUS: Neuropsychologists are PhDs with an additional year of school...they perform batteries of tests.

Medical Doctor level: Req: forever schooling. Psychiatrist (MD). Prescribe medications

    Go to college.

Psychiatrists have to go to college for the same amount of years as doctors
