It was a trap. To protect the food, if anyoen else got near their food they would blow up. At first they only intended for maybe one or two to blow up once someone stepped on them but katniss broke the apples which went all over the floor and BOOM muahahah lol

Read the book it's more elaborate.
When they first got in the arena the platforms had bombs aroun them. IF they jumped off too fast, it'd have exploded. Well the guy who got his neck snapped after Katniss set off the bombs, I think his district made the bombs and so he was an expert. He helped retrive the bombs and then set them around the food so if any other survivors snuck in, they'd have blown up. Katniss might have died if she hadn't seen Foxface hop around all the bombs.

Well it was a trap for ppl outside of their group, so when they left their food alone no one could steal it and if they did they would be killed instantly. But the reason why everything blew up was because Katniss hit apples that fell on multiple bombs.

The book explains it. Katniss wanted to destroy the food supply so the Careers would starve.

So no one would steal their food. They knew the way around it so they could get it themselves and no one else could
