Will Obama try to enact an assault weapons ban?

Now that Obama has been reelected will he attempt to enact an assault weapons ban? Also what is an assault weapon? Does a barrel shroud or pistol grip make a weapon more deadly?

Update:

RAATZ

During the 3rd political debate Obama stated that he was in favor or reimplementing the assault weapons ban. He also stated that criminals in Chicago weren't using AK47 they were using "cheap handguns" I'm not sure if he said he's in favor of an assault weapons ban to make his base happy or if he honestly believes that it will make anyone safer.

Yes, he has already said so.

    See, e.g., http://abcnews.go.com/blogs/politics/2012/10/obama...

    In part:

President Obama tonight said he’s interested in seeing an assault weapons ban reintroduced, breaking his silence on the legislation, which has persisted in spite of at least five mass shootings during his term.

At the end of a long answer to the question, “What has your administration done or planned to do to limit the availability of assault weapons?” Obama said this:

“My belief is that, (A), we have to enforce the laws we’ve already got, make sure that we’re keeping guns out of the hands of criminals, those who are mentally ill. We’ve done a much better job in terms of background checks, but we’ve got more to do when it comes to enforcement.

“But I also share your belief that weapons that were designed for soldiers in war theaters don’t belong on our streets part of it is also looking at other sources of the violence.

As a candidate in 2008, Obama campaigned on permanent reinstatement of the expired assault weapons ban, and Attorney General Eric Holder in 2009 indicated that the administration would lobby for a bill. But that never materialized and the White House has largely avoided talking about it.

In August, after the Sikh Temple shooting, Jay Carney said, “He does support renewing the assault weapons ban.”

But tonight is the first time during his first term that the sentiment has come from the president’s mouth.

Although some in Congress (Liberals mostly) are trying to push a bit for an assault weapons ban, this is very very low on the totem pole in terms of tasks that need immediate attention. Right now, the focus is primarily on expanding Asian and foreign markets for our American-made exports; setting up middle-class tax relief to promote consumer spending that sparks economic growth; getting the wayward right-wing extremists in the House to behave themselves long enough to work out a revenue-generating and spending cuts legislation; monitoring the Middle East hotspots and trying to broker a peace deal; working to prevent Iran from developing any nuclear weapons, but also trying to rein in the bully-boy Netanyahu whose building of unauthorized settlements and his unauthorized blockadge in the Gaza Strip for land promised to the Palestineans is the source of volatile tensions in the region; and so on (see whitehouse.gov and recovery.gov for the specifics).

I honestly do not think he is anywhere close to focusing on gun control---he'd be far more likely to continue his "green energies" technologies initiative designed to lessen the pace of global warming.

President Obama has actually expanded gun rights during his first four years in office. Concealed carry used to be disallowed in national parks; it's now allowed. I think he relaxed the rules on some other federal properties as well... where concealed carry used to be against the law, it is now legal.

My understanding of an 'assault weapon' is that it's something designed to kill a whole bunch of people very quickly.

you may tell how properly the Democrat occasion has brainwashed somewhat a number of the inhabitants into even considering the fact that regulations on weapons and demonizing "attack rifles" would accomplish something in the direction of making usa safer. look at how right now they throw up the "ask the youngsters of Sandy Hook." it is only unwell. The bastard who killed them replaced into making plans for months, he idolized serial killers and had to kill as many teenagers as accessible, with the least resistance. The final i checked, homicide of little ones, particularly in mass numbers is unlawful - yet that did no longer supply up him. Legally owned rifles and pistols with intense potential magazines - no longer something would have stored them out of that nut-job's arms. Too undesirable that somewhat some people thnk that the guy should not be held responsible for their strikes, yet that this is society that would desire to take the blame; or the kit that a individual makes use of (which incorporate weapons) are evil, no longer the guy who makes use of them for homicide or mayhem.

No. Why do right wingers think Obama gives a sh!t about their guns? The only thing he has ever done or said about guns was to allow a them be carried in public parks. Unlike Romney, who--wait for it-- PASSED AN ASSAULT WEAPONS BAN.

    God, the delusion.

Most assult weapons are rpid fire weapons ("machine gund" of some type).

I hope we do get a ban. I fully support every law-abiding citizen's right to own firearms for legiitmate reasons. There's one right here in my home. But NO one "needs" an assult weapon for personal defense. Collectors and others who want the weapons fo rlegiitmate purposes can and shoud be an exception. Nutcases who want to arm themselves to he teeth for some crackpot or paranoid reaon should have to show a better reason than a Rambo fetish.

l hope and you will hope after l tell you things that it will never happened. You see our hunters and gun colectoers are are last line of defense if this country is attacked. Obama plans to reduce our miliraty to the point that if a war broke out this country would be hard pressed to fight and win a battle. We have well over ten million hunters, the largest none army in the world, that will protect us without them this country is in deep doo doo.

No. A lot of hunting rifles can be technically classified as assault weapons. A lot of Democrats are hunters.

Most all of what are referred to as "Assault riffles' are really ordinary hunting rifles with high-tech looking shoulder stock, and a slightly larger magazine. That is all. Barrel length, Calibre, action, all identical!

most likely yes through the signing of the UN treaty banning of small arms...if this is signed watch out..having a gun that shoots more than one round would be a jail sentence
