My sons school has a security system. When a person walks up to the door,it's locked with a security camera. The only way someone can enter the building is by ringing the buzzer and identifying themselves.Upon entering, there are security cameras monitoring the halls.I don't think it's enough to keep our children safe.Adding security guards would help ensure the safety of our children.

It was a disaster, but you also have to keep in mind that of the thousands of schools, and hundreds of school days, it only happened in one school, on one day.

I don't want to sound callous, don't get me wrong, it's terrifying. I'm a kindergarten teacher, and since I entered the teaching program, my biggest fear is that this could happen in my school, to my students. I have very few nightmares, but things like this cause them.

The only way I can get over my fear is to know that the chances of this happening are very low. If this was something that happened everyday, all over the country, that's one thing, but they don't. Truly, there's nothing I can do to prevent it, but I can pray, and know that if it does happen, I will do my best to protect my students.

Your child is more likely to be killed in a car accident than by a shooter in the school. When I was in high school, several students died. One in a crash, one to cancer, none to a school shooter. That was in four years of school, and I went to a religious school (where you kind of think that sort of thing might possibly happen). The chances of your child being in danger of a school shooter, are there, but not inevitable.

In the grand scheme scheme of things, this was a rare incident. The chances are much greater of being hit by lightning, or hit by a car, or murdered by one's own parents than of a madman bursting into a schoolroom, bent on murdering children. You can't guard against freak occurrences, and it's a waste of time to live your life in fear of them.

You can't look your kids away. Wat happened was a disaster that can unfortunately happen again.
