Can an owner/trainer also be a jockey?

Looking up some info the other day, DRF had Kent Desormeaux listed as the trainer of a horse. Keith Desormeaux was actually the trainer. If a horse owner was also the the trainer and was a licensed jockey, could he/she ride that horse in a race?

It depends on state regulations, which vary. Kentucky, for example, explicitly permits an owner or trainer to get a provisional jockey's license upon approval by the stewards for the purpose of riding his/her horse in a race (810 KAR 1:009. Jockeys and apprentices Section 3). On the other hand, in California, CHRB Rule 1505, Qualifications for License as Horse Owner, states that " (b) No person licensed by the Board as a jockey, apprentice jockey, racing official, assistant starter or veterinarian's assistant shall be licensed also as a horse owner." In Louisiana, neither the jockey nor his/her spouse can own or have an interest in a horse racing in-state (Title 46, Part XLI, section 719B). Presumably their horse could race in other states, just not Louisiana. New York doesn't specifically state whether owners or trainers can ride, but does have a provision allowing amateur jockeys. The jockey/owner/trainer would have to check the regulations in the state(s) where he/she might wish to ride.

There has been a few exception, however, for the most part Jockeys cannot own the horses they race, due to horse racing regulations. As a result, all jockeys remain independent contractors who are employed to ride race horses by owners and trainers. Over the course of a career, a jockey might ride hundreds of horses for several different owners and trainers. In fact, a jockey frequently rides multiple horses for different owners in the same day. So it only makes sense that jockeys cannot own the horses they ride. In turn, the owners and/or trainers hire jockeys through the jockeys' agents. Jockey can and do train horses but not on a regular basis, that too would be a conflict of interest, you'll find training more with retired jockey ..some owners & trainers even become Jockeys..
