Can a Raleigh Mojave 2.0 be upgraded?

I have a chance to buy a Raleigh Mojave 2.0 for about $115 on Craigslist. The bike is in good shape. What I want to know is if I can upgrade it and have a "great" bike. As I understand it, the 2.0 is an entry level. It didn't cost much new and in that class no bike is that great. But I didn't know if it wasn't great because of the components, the frame, tires, all of the above. Can I upgrade the Raleigh Mojave 2.0 and turn it into something that might have cost $500 new? I hope that makes sense.

Replace the rear wheel to one with a double wall rim & a 7 speed "cassette" instead of the 7 speed "freewheel" currently on the bike. About $100 to $120. Anything more than that is a waste of money. Just buy a new bike.

There is a bit of a quandry here.

Yes, you COULD upgrade the bike and turn it into something that may have cost $500 new BUT it will cost you $600-700 to do it.

Why? Because factories operate on economies of scale which allows their COMPLETE bikes to sell at competitive pricing. When you buy parts at retail- even when steeply discounted- you are still paying WAY more than the factory paid combined with the shop markup.

We are constantly advising people to search for a new bike within their budget rather than try to make a bike worth more. It will be much more of a bike than if you take an old one and "upgrade" it.

I have the sport. It is fine for city riding. I took it to a real mountain bike trail about 3 months ago and it was not fun. The fork is a piece of ****. You really get beaten up out their. also, i had to change the front axel because it was to cheap and my tire would slowly shift and rub against the fork. My advice, if you want to go mountain biking with it, get a full suspension and a air fork. The responses have spring and only in one side.

Compare the 2.0 to the 8.0, a $600 bike, which I believe is the same frame.

    You'll need:

New wheels (freehub, cassette) double wall rims

    mechanical disk brakes, new fork

new shifter, new derailleurs, crank, bottom bracket

headset, seatpost , saddle, handle bars, etc. etc.

    About $800-$1000 of parts.

If you want a good bike, get a good bike.

Replace only what wears out, it's not worth upgrading. Save that money for the next bike and maintenance on this one.
