Engine in #20 fails post race inspection - heavy penalties levied?

NASCAR announced the engine in Matt Kenseth's winning car from Kansas had one underweight connecting rod. Penalties include loss of 50 driver/owner points, crew chief Jason Ratcliff fined $200k and suspended 6 races, suspension of #20 owner license for 6 races (can't earn owners points), and the win will not count for bonus points for the Chase nor for the wild card spot. NASCAR let them have the win as no performance gain was noted, but certainly made the team accountable.

Should the win have been taken away?

How bad do you think this will hurt Kenseth's season (will drop from 8th to 15th in drivers points)?

Woah! Those are some hefty fines! Taking away a win? With 50 points being deducted that's more than one can earn in a race, plus that win doesn't count when the chase comes. That's about as much as you can do to strip a win from someone. Not to mention a 6 race suspension for the crew chief and owners points is just adding insult to injury.

Gibbs doesn't pick the parts, thats TRD.

Read about Balanced and blueprinting Engines. They want ALL the pistons and rods to weigh the same. Having one rod lighter, HURT his performance, it didn't help.

The guy that picked his parts should be fired. NOT for cheating, or helping him, but for HURTING his performance. Gibbs does NOT have a rep for cheating. He's probably the most honest guy at the track.

An unbalanced engine running at those RPMs, It's lucky his engine didn't blow up.

That's like failing in the 1st grade of engine building. It's one of the FIRST things that mechanics learn. ALL engine builders know better than to run an unbalanced engine. The higher the RPM, the more likely something bad happens. Someone screwed up, but it was NOT done on purpose.

They would ALL have to be underweight, the same, for that to help him.

If Kenseth is suspended Gibbs should get Danica Patrick to fill in for him. NASCAR would never dare inspect any car she was driving.

""Should the win have been taken away?""

Regardless our opinions on the topic - but, seriously, see if you can find record of them EVER taking away a victory before even contemplating such a thing..............

Joe Gibbs is a cheater. That's how Kyle Boosh got so many wins.

Toyota has resorted to cheating to try to win races now, huh. Sad.
