Why is land in Maine so cheap?

I've looked at lots of sites, landandfarm, landwatch, others. Land seems super cheap. tens of acres for very little money (imho). Why is that? It looks like a nice place, trees and all, not a wasteland like the low priced land in Wyoming.

It depends on where you look. For instance if you are looking around Bangor, ME then the prices will be higher because the land is near a major city. The further out from a city you go, the cheaper the land because- chances are not all the ulities are set up for that land you as the buyer would have to shell out the money to get the proper connections in place. The people, especially the ones not so near the cities; let's just say some are special but most are crazy rednecks. Also, a good portion of the ME population is on some form of welfare or SSI benefits. There is a good amount of drug use within the population of ME also. In addition the further away from a city you are the less likely you are to get services you may take for granted like, cable or fast internet.
