Foreign tourists in California, married but under age?
I live in UK. The daughter of some friends of mine has just married a very pleasant young man. Both of them are 17. They are living with my friends until they are 18, when they will get a place of their own (in UK 18 is the age at which you can sign contracts, etc, but the age of consent for sex is 16).
They were all planning to go as a family to California for a holiday later this year, but I have just seen that the age of consent in California is up at 18. Seems rather high, but California's business not mine.
Question is, if these folks all go to California, and the two young lovebirds have sex (chances of not are tiny, to say the least, it currently takes a hydraulic press to get them apart for meals!) do they get arrested, despite the fact that they are married? If so, there might be a distinct dip in California tourism when that gets publicised, but either way they need to know before confirming the bookings, because of course if so they will go somewhere less strange.
@Gazza: Well actually, mate, when two young folk book the Honeymoon Suite, hotel staff will probably be able to take a wild shot at what they will be doing in there. And of course their passports, which the hotels will see, declare them to be 17.

All states and the US recognize the valid marriage laws of other countries.
Age of consent applies to minors here who are NOT married. Your friend is completely legal.

locate the style of a marriage organiser, call 'em, say your 24, snag your mom's credit card, pay all of it off, deliver out invites secretly, purchase a valuable gown/greater healthful, locate your true love, help them choose a gown/greater healthful, locate some bridesmaids and dudes, have a best guy and female, hire a clergyman, happen on the day and say "I do." Now do not truly do this 'coz it is unlawful and you gets arrested while they locate out your real age. How old are you, anywayz?

Come on mate, do you think the American authorities are going to find out if they have a shag in their hotel room? I'm sure they won't be having it in the hotel lobby.

Legally, they are bound by the laws of the country they are in. Hence people being arrested in places like Dubai for drinking etc.
They may not take into account their marriage, or they may think it through. But they'll just have to stop having sex in public and do it where no-one can see- I know, boring!
