I don't understand figure drawing. Basic forms or from life?

I'm trying to learn to draw, and I'm getting stuck at figure drawing. I searched on how to learn, but some say you NEED to draw from life first while some say you need to learn basic forms (like cubes, cylinders etc) first. Then they say you also need perspective, but you can't actually use it when drawing from life right? A lot of people are pretty insistent that you MUST draw from life, but I don't understand how that could possibly help me. My goal is to draw from imagination in a sorta Disney style (cartoonish) and I want to learn realistic first. So how should I learn figure?

Figures can be built up from a series of shapes, so you start with the shapes and then graduate onto figures. That is just one way of learning to draw figures, if you apply yourself it can be successful, not everyone uses the technique (and you can use it while life drawing).

Of course you use perspective in life drawing.
