Think he might be saying "Look guys, I was trying to describe the beginning of things to a bunch of ignorant, sem-literate nomadic tribesmen. I gave 'em a story they could understand.

"Do you seriously think I'd try to tell them about the Big Bang I did, and quarks, and black holes, and string theory? Really?

Look there is stuff in there for you people who know a bit more than nomadic tribesmen for multiple thousand years ago, but you've got to stop pretending you're as stupid and ignorant as they were  before you will get it."

Whether you take the Genesis story, literally, figuratively or as a condensation(my personal preference), the outcome is the same which is that you walk away with a basic understanding of the nature of God's relationship with man.

Which I rest assured is the intention of the author.

If the intention of the author had been to describe in detail the creation of the universe, then perhaps it would be more in line with your passions.

If people need to be fluent in 7 ancient languages and have PhDs in literature and ancient studies *and* already believe it's true to believe it's true to properly understand his great book with its urgent message, then it's his own fault that his people are so confused.
