How do we improve dog food flavor and stay kidney-safe?
Our dog was diagnosed with stage-1 kidney failure. We switched to Hills k/d - we mix the kibble with the canned and (try to) feed her twice a day. Usually she won't eat in the morning but does eat in the evening. We can't free-feed because our other dog will eat the food the moment our backs are turned. I am seeking recommendations for improving the food's flavor while remaining kidney-safe (low protein, low sodium, low phosphorous). So far I've read about using low sodium broth, or cottage cheese (would't that be high in protein?) Any suggestions?

I would read this article and the linked scientific studies, particularly the one by Dr. Bovee: http://www.dogaware.com/health/kidneyprotein.html While the diet should be low in phosphorus, protein restricted diets are generally not beneficial to a dog with kidney failure, except in very specific circumstances, and can in fact be harmful to other aspects of their health. I would bring this research to your vets attention, or seek a second opinion from a vet with a more holistic approach.

Increase the water intake of the dog too - any loss of kidney function needs the animal to get more fluids in to flush the kidneys as much as possible.
