Harry Potter question?
In the Half blood prince movie professor slughorn says to harry:
"I taught the whole Black family except Sirius. Shame. Talented boy. I got Regulus when he came along, of course, but I’d have liked the set,""
but he also says that Harry's mother was one of his "absolute favourites"...
I thought Lily and sirius were of similar age and attended Hogwarts at the same time? yes? no? Are we supposed to believe sirius did not take potions? but isn't potions like compulsory subject??
Forgive me for quoting the movies and not the novel, its been ages since I read it - but I would like fans' of the books opinion on this. thanks

The line from the book is:
"The whole Black family had been in my House, but Sirius ended up in Gryffindor! Shame - he was a talented boy. I got his brother, Regulus, when he came along, but I'd have liked the set."
So in the book, Slughorn is talking about the Blacks who ended up in Slytherin, not in his Potions class.
Potions isn't compulsory, though. Harry was all ready to give it up when he got below the recommended grade. He only continued when Slughorn took over the subject and McGonnagol told him that Slughorn would accept slightly lower grades.

If I remember correctly, in the novel he was referring to Sirius being in Gryffindor rather than in Slytherin like the rest of the Black family. He was the head of Slytherin in his time, so he's talking about "collecting" the students in his house, which is why he refers to them as a set. But he would have taught them all.
