What does valve grinding compound do on a Serpentine Belt? Is it just a Band-Aid for a problem?

Don't put that on a noisy drive belt. You need to remove the belts and spin all of the pulleys to make sure you don't have a bad bearing. Then check the belts for cracks and replace them if cracked. If the belts are not cracked you can dust them with talcum powder or body powder to make them quiet.

If pretty much destroys the pulleys and grinds away the belt. You may as well pour sand on it.
