Was actress Ava Gardner serious when she said Melbourne, Australia, is the perfect place for the end of the world?

Ava Gardner made a movie in Melbourne, Australia, in the 1950s called "The Beach", about the end of the world and the last of humankind surviving in Melbourne.

She made a comment that Melbourne is "the perfect place to make a film about the end of the world". Her co-star Gregory Peck didn't make any comments, although throughout the years, a lot of US actors have called Melbourne the "backside of the world".

I live in Melbourne myself and couldn't agree anymore. I think I've become truly mentally unwell living here and want to relocate to USA.

She would now be similarly disappointed as multiculturalism has ruined it. White flight continues.

Things may have changed a bit in 60 years - I think back then there was very little of anything open after dark, not just in Melbourne but everywhere.

She was serious and as someone who lived in Melbourne in the 50s, I would have to agree that at the time, it was a fair comment. Not now though. Melbourne is now an amazing city and rates among the best in the world for lifestyle, amenities, public transport, nightlife, dining out, employment opportunities, safety, cleanliness and many other aspects of city living. People who put Melbourne down, obviously don't know the city well.

I would sooner live in Melbourne than anywhere in the US, it was a silly comment but On the Beach was my favourite movie, Australia's John Meillon was in it also, so was Fred Astaire

Melbourne is well known internationally as a hotbed of left wing extremism.
