When I had a problem that was causing my check engine light to be on (EGR system), I found I could get it to turn off by disconnecting the battery. However, it would come back on in a day or two. Once I actually fixed the problem, it wouldn't come on at all. So I would try it the easy way, just disconnect the battery and see what happens.

You just disconnect the positive side of the battery for two minutes and the system will reset automatically if the problem is resolved! Then reconnect battery start the engine light stays out you fixed the problem if it comes back on to see a mechanic!

Any auto parts store will read the codes for free and erase them which turns out the CEL.

If the "issue" corrected itself, the check engine light should also correct itself. Odds are there's another problem with your car that you haven't noticed yet. Maybe you should have it checked by someone who actually knows what to look for.

Go to any auto parts store and use the free interface.

If that is really all that was causing it, then the light will go off on its own.

If you wan to reset it, then just get a code reader, plug in to the OBD port and clear all the diagnostic codes.

Most auto-parts stores will loan you a code reader for free and you can reset it in the parking lot

If you reset the code and the issue still exists the light will just come back on.

Also you can t pass emissions inspection just by resetting the code because they will see that the monitors have been reset when they plug in their computer.
