It depends on where you're planning to go when you're there. Most of the time when I've gone I have not needed a car.

no just get a cab from airport to hotel stay in french quarter you can walk any place you want to go

  • My boyfriend and I were there about six weeks ago. We stayed in the Central Business District. The French Quarter is very walkable. There is public transit. You can also take Uber/Lyft places.

A caveat: We both live in DC, and I am used to relying on walking and public transit.

No, you do not need a rental car to visit New Orleans as a tourist. The French Quarter is walkable, public transit is good, and there are lots of taxis, plus Lyft & Uber.
