Can Crude Oil be stored in wood barrels?

Since there is no much oil in storage, a friend of mine was wondering if wood barrels are an option?

Sure. Stack them in your garage, too.

It can and was,  until the 1890's.  Unfortunately, wood barrels are expensive,  difficult to make, and inefficient in use of space.   That's why your car has a steel gas tank instead of a wooden one.   and incidently ....why crude oil is measured in 'barrels'.

In the early 1900s it was transported in them.  Some up to 500 gallon barrels on horse drawn wagons.   But the EPA.  Has rules against it today. Spills leaks & such.

Where are you going to get millions of wooden barrels on short notice?

A barrel of oil is 42 US gallons.. Crude oil is quite toxic, very sticky. Wood barrels not at all suitable

You could, but the barrel would be worth more than the contents.

Why would you want to? Metal is much cheaper.

Gasoline used to be transported in barrels by horse drawn carts.
