Is most marketing a waste of money?

Only very unique ad campaigns that create an emotional connection to the audience are actually effective. Most ads are completely filtered out by habit by most people. They instantly skip youtube ads and tune them out, they completely ignore banner ads, etc etc. Most television ads are filtered out and people look at their phone during commercials. It's just throwing money away thinking people actually care about your advertisements. Just like how people on social media think other people care about their stories they post when half the time they instantly click through it without even watching half a second of your post

Advertisement is derived from the Latin word called advertere which means turn towards (source- Google dictionary). This is exactly what the brands do. They want us to turn towards them every time.

Let's give you a real world human example:-

There's a boy who's popular in an Indian engineering college due to his dancing. Who gained popularity due to his performance in a freshers party. So if the boy wants to maintain the popularity he has to keep performing in college events and show it to his fellow students for all the 4 years. If he doesn't, people will forget his performance and he will lose his popularity.

Similarly brands needs to keep on telling their existence and their new performances or else some other boy will come and take away the popularity.

If you’re trying to increase the value of your company to sell it for profit or to attract investors down the road, you will need to be able to show how you’ve reached the success you’ve reached. A marketing budget and a marketing plan will help you drive up the intangible value of your company because you can show investors or buyers exactly what you’ve done. You can show potential buyers what campaigns you’ve done or not done and what advertising venues you’ve used or not used. Then, you quantify the results of your dollars spent so that you can show potential buyers what worked or what didn’t work.

Advertising is just one piece of Marketing.  You can't throw Marketing out the window by not liking one piece.

If your ad is awful but your hit rate is high enough you can still guide that person to get your energy drink. If the hit rate is high enough you will likely start to think they must be a trusted brand they have enough money to be marketing so heavily. I might try their thing now if I am in the market for energy drinks.

Enough half second cursory looks can add up in the human brain. We are very strange creatures, and we are barely starting to figure out how our brains work.
