I thought the Japanese were chilled out but my male boss is an **** hole. Are all male bosses like that in Japan ?

I'm not sure what he did or said to you. But no, not all bosses are horrible in Japan or in the world. In one of the companies I worked at, my boss was Japanese and he was such a wonderful and polite person to work with, he was opened minded to new ideas and everything was quite easy-going. But in another company I worked at, my boss was an English-Irish man and no one liked him because he micromanaged everything, and no matter what new ideas or suggestions my team brought to the table he was quite reluctant to listen and always wanted his way even if his idea did not work. You are either lucky to have a good boss or unlucky to have a bad boss, not everyone is the same, and race does not matter. Good luck next time.

No . There's good and bad bosses where ever we go .

Just be nice to him and see what happens ...

Japan is a high stress society . Many work too many hours and

days ...That's why they have one of the highest suicide rates in the world .

You give no context so it's impossible to say. As for lording it over people, they are like everyone else. Japan can be a very high stress place - if you thought otherwise, look at the very high consumption rate of booze and smoking every day. Maybe your workplace is in trouble, maybe he's having a bad day, or maybe he's like you say. Could be the same when you move back and get a job in your own country too.

Maybe he just doesnt like you and wants you to move on.

We would need more information on what your boss does. There is more power distance between bosses and employees in Japan than in the US, and it may be that your expectations of being treated like an equal does not fit his definition of good management. On the other hand, in Japan, employees are almost never fired. They are considered members of the family, and retrained or repositioned first in an effort to keep them, while US companies fire quickly and easily. Do some reading on management styles and cultural differences.

You're generalising about an entire race, and entire nation of people here. Twice, in fact. First you just assume that all Japanese people are chilled out, and now that you find your boss is unpleasant, you assume that all male bosses in Japan are like that.

Why would assume that such a large group of people are all the same like that? That an large group of loosely connected individuals can so easily be summed up?

Being Japanese or any other nationality doesn't make someone any one thing. Just like anywhere else, there are all sorts of people in Japan, some good, some bad, some nice, some unpleasant, some calm, some easily agitated.

To be entirely honest, I currently have a far lower opinion of you than I do about your horrible boss, thanks to you asking this unbelievably ignorant question.

Your boss is a jerk because he is a jerk and being Japanese doesn't automatically make someone not a jerk.  You have been watching too many tv shows.  To believe that anyone is somehow better or worse just because of their ethnicity is naïve at best, and racists at worst.

It's normal in Japan, so let's respect the culture.
