Before Covid caused a recession the US bought 9 million barrels of foreign oil a day. How is that being energy independent?

Geez, that is a lot of oil. I wonder if the center of the Earth is actually 'creating' more oil?

Because you are ignoring the 8.5 million barrels a day the USA was exporting at the same time. See the link.
And then, when you also throw in natural gas exports and exports of refined petroleum like propane, the USA was in fact a net exporter of gas and oil.
All due to Trump's unwavering support of energy production and fracking.
Thank you President Trump.

As of the end of 2019 we also exported over 8.5 million barrels a day. Our daily consumption was 20.5 million barrels, and our net import was 0.5 million barrels, a "whopping" 2.5% of our consumption.
I remember how much the Democrats objected to this and still wonder why they oppose us achieving energy independence? Are you unhappy that we don't fund terrorist regimes any more?

The barrels were bought at bargain prices. No one equals the Middle East in oil production and exportation.
