Why do you need one? If it's for protection, why not use a non-lethal alternative (like a taser) that will incapacitate whoever is attacking you giving you enough time to call the police...

In New York City?   LOL........ Unless you know someone or are famous you have about zero chance of getting one. 

It's extremely hard and nearly impossible to get a pistol permit in NYC with a perfectly clean record. If your misdemeanor is for any violent or drug related crime its not gunna happen. Not sure if there are any special laws in NYC about ammo purchases, but you should be able to purchase it without a pistol permit.
