How has archery not become a more popular sport?

After a major blockbuster movie like The Avengers came out and a TV show like the CW’s Arrow show featuring characters who’s really efficient with a bow and arrows, you’d think that within this past decade such a sport would somehow skyrocket to the point where you’d have nearly a generation who’s really skillful at it. So why isn’t it? What gives?

It's probably because it is hard to do in an urban environment.  It doesn't have the broad appeal nor the home safety angle of firearms and it's not as exciting as say, basketball.  It's actually a quiet contemplative sport that requires quite a lot of physical and mental space.  It also requires quite a lot of skill to do those fancy things you see on TV.  Anybody can shoot a gun but it takes some practice to shoot a bow.  And some strength too.  I'm not at all surprised that it isn't a "mainstream" sport.

In the UK we are somewhat haunted by the death of Harold in 1066 due to an arrow in the eye.  The victory of Henry V at Agincourt only partly alleviated this.

I mean look at the trouble we have with The current Royals descened back to William in 1066

I should say England, not the UK.

I find that most people want to live on Easy Street, where they don't have to put out a lot of work or effort.   Archery sounds like it would take strength, skill, and a lot of work.
