Is this friend worth it?
I have this friend who did not work for a number of yrs. Claim he has back /hip problem. He was fighting to get full disability. He finds out he received 50% of what other people get from their disability. He's 49 yrs old. Still lived with his mom, his oldest son (25) youngest son (9) He keeps talking about getting a camper. But no camper. He gets back pay for his disability. ($2,375 out of $9,000) every 6 months. He get his disabilty every month. But it's like $765/month
He ask me off and on to come see him. But I turn down the his request. I've called his phone only to find out it goes to voice mail. I'll tell him I tried to call him. His answer would be I was busy and was not able to answer. I think when he sees my name on his phone he choose not to answer. Which is kinda rude. He finally called later in the day.
He is addicted to pain pills. Takes four pills a day for the pain in his back. He was mad at his oldest son because he would not help him set up a bed for his youngest. So he went to a store to get some liquor. He was getting drunk from that. Half way through our conversation He ask me can If I can tell he was getting drunk. I told him I can not tell....Then ten minutes later. He hangs up on me. No calling back to apologize.
We used to be close. He moved to FL in 1996. Moved back in 2000. He was like a different person he was.
He thinks the state will give him the full $9,000. I told him it highly unlikely the state will not do that.

Sounds like he's going through a hard time and has given up. If you want to keep the friendship, lower your expectations. For ecample, send him a text every now and then with a piece of news and expect nothing in return. If you want to say hello, text him in the morning once in awhile (when maybe he's not drunk) something like, "If you feel like catching up, give me a call. I'm free until noon."

If his conversations revolve around illness and money he doesn't seem like a good catch. Maybe you should just start a new life for yourself and not worry about what money he has coming in, what disabilities he has etc. If he's getting drunk a lot just stop and think what life will be like with him. Not a good scenario, is it?

How, in any way, is this a personal finance question?
Why are you so compelled to insert your nose into his life and ask us to judge him?
