if I go to prison and use the martingale system (doubling my next bet until I eventually win), will he be irritated when I win

you don't know too much about bookies, do you? they only pay 90 per cent, the other ten per cent is what they call the 'juice,' or the 'vig.' Also, if the bookie thinks you are doing that, he will begin demanding that you pay cash up front in order to book the bet. the only way to beat a bookie is wait for a line that is distorted from reality because too much was bet on one team, and the bookie has to add too many points to even out the wagers on the game (bookies make the most money when equal amounts are bet on both teams -- that is the REAL reason why there is a pointspread.

It is a dumb system designed for the roulette wheel.    Let say you bet $1 and lose.   Then you bet $2 and lose,  then 4, 8, 16, 32, 64, 128 and you lost them all.   Then you bet $256 and you win.   Congratulations,  you are now $1 ahead.   So you start again,   each time you win you will $1 more dollar ahead.   It will take you hours and hours got get far enough ahead that it will be worth it.

Martingale doesn't work, in any game, ever,  in the long term.

Martingalers are more than welcome at an actual sportsbook, but if you're talking about a street bookie, I guess it depends on the bookie because bookies are just regular guys who don't necessarily understand gambling/math much better than an average joe. (It doesn't take a rocket scientist to profit when you get to charge vig, copy the Vegas lines and take action from regular people in your neighborhood.) He won't ban you or be irritated, but if he's dumb he might restrict your betting limits as a counter-measure, thus costing himself money.

The problem with gamblers is they only remember the wins and conveniently forget the losses. The only winners in gambling is the bookmaker or the house.
