I'm disabled, should I keep trying to work a job even though I keep failing at work?

I have some mental health problems. I've been trying to work for years without success. I just do not know what to do. I'm also worried that social security might not be around when I get older. I'm a 39 year old female. I just don't know if I should give up. My mental health problems are getting better, but I still have issues.

Update:

I don't have a job right now. I'm saying if I should give up on trying to work.

Update 2:

Thank you, Jimmy you understood what I was trying to say. I guess I will keep trying.

Update 3:

Also, thank you, Pearl that is a thought, but I think I may be able to work if I find something that is good for me.

Update 4:

All of you have made very good points. Thank you so much, it will be difficult to choose a best answer.

No.  Give up on your dreams, Susan!  Just blend in.  Let somebody else win!

Source(s): My mom used to write that in my lunchbox. This is what the workforce teaches us. It's a fundamentally flawed system.

If you wish to continue eating food, benefitting from warmth in your home and clean water coming from your taps and you are actually capable of doing 'some form of paid work' then YES you should be doing that - not just for housing, food and warmth but also for your own self-esteem.

Ask you psychiatrist for his/her professional opinion on your situation.

Without knowing exactly what you have done and what hasn't worked it is impossible to say.  Have you tried limited work (ie 2 half days) or only full time?  Have you gotten help from vocational rehab?  Have you tried work you really like?  Have you tried working with a job coach?

I wish to have an employer at this point that would allow for my, fine one day. Useless the next life I have. Only have a few hours on a good day, never know from one to the next whether or not I'll be able to move or not. If you have an understanding employer who is OK with the uncertainty of the situation, God bless man, hold on to that job. At least you have one.

If you give up, you become an invalid for life. If you keep fighting to improve, you could have a great life ahead of you. Keep going.

If your mental health problems are getting better, try to keep your job. Seems sensible, right?
